About Gary

I am a semi-retired former Information Technology Professional with proven abilities in employing mathematical models to forecast business growth trends, and I therefore possess a deep understanding of mathematics. In addition, during my career I was called upon on numerous occasions to mentor and/or train less-experienced staff in writing programs incorporating a wide variety of mathematical techniques and algebraic formulas.

Regarding my tutoring of young students, my experience includes having worked as a Peer Tutor in both high school and college. Additionally, over the years I have performed freelance Math and English Composition tutoring for elementary, middle school, and high school students via word-of-mouth referrals.

Currently, my primary areas of tutoring expertise are Math and English Composition at both the elementary and middle school levels.

The keys to my tutoring philosophy are threefold: 1) assess the student's current strengths and areas needing improvement, 2) identify the student's preferred learning mode (i.e. auditory, visual, hands-on), and 3) establish a supportive rapport between tutor and student. Based on these essential building blocks, I utilize a variety of techniques for gaining mastery, including assisting in the completion of daily homework assignments, offering short quiz-type questions, working through chapter/lesson review exercises, and administering mock and/or chapter review tests for exam preparation. I possess a strong proficiency in helping students who are struggling with a particular topic and/or problem-solving technique. I take great pride in assisting every student I work with develop mastery in any area of academic challenge he or she encounters!

I possess a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science/Programming with a minor in Mathematics, along with a wide-ranging liberal arts educational background characterized by a consistently outstanding record of academic excellence. Additionally, my personal/professional strengths include both an inherent aptitude and intrinsic zeal for effectively communicating with students and assisting in their development of individually-tailored, achievement-focused, confidence-building subject matter and test preparation skill enhancement. Equally important, I seek to continuously foster an educational approach designed to make the learning experience not only highly effective, but personally satisfying and fun as well; in short, to instill a 'love of learning' that lays the groundwork for the student's development of a lifelong dedication to the quest for knowledge.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have a Bachelors' Degree in Management Information Systems with a minor in Mathematics. Additionally, I worked for over 25 years as a Computer Programmer, often developing programs that were comprised of mathematically-intensive processes. Finally, I scored a 33 on the Mathematics portion of the ACT test.

Elementary Math

I have a very strong background in Mathematics, having worked for over 20 years as a Computer Programmer, as well as having a minor in Math for my Bachelor's degree.

I seek to continuously foster an educational approach designed to make the learning experience not only highly effective, but personally satisfying and fun as well; in short, to instill a 'love of learning' that lays the groundwork for the student's development of a lifelong dedication to the quest for knowledge.

I have tutored elementary level students in Math on a freelance basis for several years, and have consistently succeeded in helping each student develop mastery in the principles and problem-solving methods of Elementary Math.

I have a keen aptitude for exam preparation techniques, as well as an interest in making learning elementary math fun!

Prealgebra

I have a very strong background in Mathematics, having worked for over 20 years as a Computer Programmer, as well as having a minor in Math for my Bachelor's degree.

I have tutored elementary and middle school students in Pre-algebra on a freelance basis for several years, and have consistently succeeded in helping each student develop mastery in its principles and problem-solving methods.

Additionally, I have a keen aptitude for exam preparation techniques, as well as an inherent ability in making learning Pre-algebra FUN!

SAS

I have a high level of proficiency with the SAS language and have experience in teaching the intricacies of its syntax and logic to new staff members during a 10 year period of my IT career.

My expertise in SAS spans all major functionality features of the language, from merging/aggregating/transforming variables within the DATA step to utilizing a myriad of SAS Procedures (including but not limited to PROC UNIVARIATE, PROC MEANS, PROC REG, PROC FREQ, PROC SUMMARY, PROC CONTENTS, PROC PRINT, and PROC SQL {for reading Relational Database files}) to generate output files and/or reports. I have also achieved a SAS Certification through Brainbench.com, an online technical certification website.

In mentoring junior staff members in the use of SAS to solve a specific problem, my approach was typically one of demonstrating in a step-by-step fashion the coding solution for a similar program, ensuring at each line of code that the junior staff member thoroughly understood the syntax and logic involved. I would then ask them to take a similar step-by-step approach to writing a program to solve the business problem at hand. This combination of patiently walking through the solution of a similar problem and then allowing the junior staff member to utilize the same approach in writing a program to meet the requirements of their specific business challenge proved highly effective.

Additionally, I assisted junior staff by intentionally specifying errors in my sample code, so that they could learn how to interpret the SAS log to identify and correct syntax and logic errors.
