I am patient with students who have a different learning style and love to encourage students who do not like to read by giving them a purpose for reading. I have been a teaching assistant in a middle school setting for 8 years. I work with students in the reading department doing interventions for fluency and comprehension skills. I also have classroom experience in literature, science and history. I have also raised a daughter with autism who has been accepted to the University of Dubuque in Fall of 2015 and will major in Business.
I just received my BA in Liberal and Integrative Studies from the University of Illinois, Springfield and completed a class on tutoring. I am proficient in DBQ type writing and have knowledge of MLA and APA formats, as well as annotated bibliographies.
I have written a book about autism and have spoken to a few groups. Prior to becoming a teaching assistant I worked in the electronics industry, video game industry and newspaper industry. I have proofreading experience, copy writing experience and often help students understand why they are learning the things they are learning and how they can be applied to real world situations.
I have also worked with special needs children in a religious education program and also worked for SEDOL for a school year. If your child thinks differently or needs explanation on how to understand the literature he/she is reading, I like to bring in real world situations and will often use the internet or other ways of explaining to get the message across. I am proficient in Word and PowerPoint and can also help your student with composing and typing papers or presentations. I look forward to helping your student. I'm very happy that I found Natalie. I don't like to write but she makes me want to write and that's a miracle! I have ADHD and she knows exactly how to explain things in a way that I can understand.
Natalie worked with my daughter on preparing for college. They focused on reading and writing skills. She was extremely helpful and organized. She had lessons prepared that were tailored to my daughters learning style and needs. She had many great strategies that can be applied to any subject. She gave her good resources to help throughout college and by the end of summer my daughter was able to write a college essay successful. I would highly recommend Natalie!
Excellent tutor. She has explained for me all the necessary processes I need to follow. She teaches me the rules of writing and it helps me improve my skills.
Great tutor for my son. She accommodates his lessons to meet his interests and his needs! He stays interested so he wants to go to his lessons.
I cannot believe how well my son is doing with only a few lessons from Natalie. He has a new and positive outlook on school. Thank You! My son's overall self confidence is also 100% better.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have raised a daughter with autism. At age three she could only navigate life with a picture schedule. Through OT/PT and speech therapy, countless hours of reading a preparation she is now 16 and mainstreamed completely in high school. She has gone to Europe on her own (with school for class credit) and is planning on going to college.
I have worked with many children of various ages with autism and Aspergers.
I have been a teaching assistant in a middle school setting for 6 years. Although I am currently working with 7th graders, I have worked with 2nd-4th grade special education students. I feel that I have the skills associated with the lower grades since I am assisting students at the 7th grade level. I also did many study guides and adaptations for my daughter with autism when she was in K-6th and have kept most of the flash cards and study guides I used with her throughout these grades.
I have experience with Public Speaking as I was a marketing manager who used to give speeches to rooms of 100+ people. I also have helped students prepare speeches for classes and put together their power points. I recently took a college level public speaking class to utilize all the current technology and have various rubrics to work with.
I have experience with history, science and literature text as well as the skills required for inferencing, prediction, main idea, supporting detail and writing essays and term papers.
I can work on your student's homework, or bring in additional work sheets to help improve their skills.
In my current position as teaching assistant one of my duties is to come up with study guides to help students with IEP's and who are in interventions. I have developed U.S. and Illinois Constitution Study Guides, Science Study Guides and History Study Guides. I also work with students in reading their novels and helping them with understanding content and vocabulary.
