Hello! I have been teaching English to high school and college students for over 20 years and have had success with helping all my students to grow and improve their skills. I specialize in teaching writing and have been an AP Literature and Composition instructor as well as Reader for the exam for over 10 years. I am also trained in a variety of methods for reaching struggling learners and have certification for teaching dyslexics to read through multi-sensory OG instruction. My educational background began at Eastern Illinois University (BA with certification) and I quickly earned a MA in English, emphasis in writing from Saint Xavier University. I have completed an intense 2 year program for the dyslexia instruction and have targeted training for teaching college writing through Northwestern University. I completed an intense 2.5 year training program that incorporated OG training as its foundation and included Wilson training as well. I have over 10 years experience tutoring students in a 1:1 multi-sensory approach that yields very positive results and growth in decoding, comprehension, spelling, grammar/writing, increased self-concept and generally more positive outlook on school and learning.

Essay Writing

Essay Writing

Teaching essay writing has been a constant in my career as a high school and university adjunct. I start with a tentative thesis after some discussion about the prompt requirements and the student's thinking around the prompt. The student needs to come to a clear idea about the claim or position they intend to defend in the body of the essay. Once that idea is set, we then work from the tentative thesis to shape how the body section will be constructed. After the draft is written, I work with the student to look at word choice and syntax to make the most powerful thesis possible.

I have a lot of experience teaching grammar to students in grades 9-12 and beyond. I use a variety of methods and connect it to writing so that it makes practical sense.

I have been teaching AP Literature for 20 years and have experience teaching the curriculum to a wide range of learning styles and ability levels. I also read/score for the exam in early June. I have been a Reader for the College board for 9 years as well. My student pass rate sits at 87-88%. I hope to provide support and encourage growth in you or your student as well.

Wonderful help with AP literature essay

I think my son finally understands what a literary analysis essay is supposed to look like. Julie was extremely helpful in helping him re-write an essay he wrote in the wrong genre for AP lit class.
