I was a special education teacher for 35 years in the public schools. After that retirement, I taught GED at our community college for 22 years. After that retirement, I have continued teaching GED online. I have devised my own materials for teaching the subjects on the GED test. Most of my students find the commercial GED materials too overwhelming. The one on one tutoring experience lets the student cover the areas that are needed and skip the areas that have already been mastered. It also allows the student to ask the questions needed for complete understanding.
When teaching in the public schools, my students were on an elementary level. My LD/BD class covered grades 3-6. When I transitioned to the GED program, I had to adjust to a new set of teaching skills. As a novice, I started my first GED class using the commercial materials supplied by the college. It did not take long to see that providing the subject matter in that form was not working. My students were not successful in the past using commercial textbooks and needed a different approach to be successful in the future. The skills needed to pass the GED test are clearly outlined. I decided to design my own study materials. These materials present the skills needed to pass the GED test in easy to understand language. GED students just want to get the job done and want to concentrate on those skills that lead to a successful outcome. That outcome could be a better job, further education, or sometimes just personal satisfaction. My material covers each subject without presenting unnecessary information. If also presents methods in math that simplify problem solving. I have reinforcing materials in all subjects. I have been successful in helping students complete their studies to pass the GED test. One student stated, "I didn't know I was smart !" I would like to help you realize the same.
