Hello, I am Darryl! I graduated from Columbia University in the City of New York with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics, and I have been an educator of mathematics and physics (specializing in university level mathematics and AP subjects). Tutoring and teaching has always been an important and exciting vocational interest. I spent some of my time in high school helping my friends with homework, and I even began substitute teaching classes for my high school teachers who were absent! Though, I almost lost interest in math and physics in high school until one of my instructors reignited my interests. Since then, I have been an avid champion of STEM. I want to give my students the opportunity to see the beauty of mathematics and physics, as well as reignite interests as well.

Methodologically, I strive for student mastery through a combination of careful, clear instruction, visual aid/effects, real life application and attention-to-detailed patience. My goal is to communicate difficult subjects in a way the student clearly understands.

Approved Subjects

Calculus

Calculus

Quantum physics is my specialty, and I must use multivariable calculus and differential equations almost every time I do a calculation. I have over 10 years teaching calculus topics (including multivariable and differential equations.) For test prep, or the AP exam, I have three years of experience tutoring both AP Calculus AB, and AP Calculus BC.
Chemistry

Chemistry

Physical Chemistry (quantum chemistry and thermodynamics), solutions, condensed matter
GRE

GRE

While I can tutor both verbal and quantitative, my primary focus would involve the GRE: Physics exam. I have over 10 years of physics and math teaching experience, with six years experience teaching online. My primary specialties are electrodynamics and quantum mechanics (physics).
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

Linear algebra is paramount to modelling, coding and higher-level physics problems. My research and experience utilizes linear algebra and analysis as part of the quantitative basis for solving problems.
Physics

Physics

My primary research involves studying the topological surface states and 2D electron gases in ultra high magnetic fields. For this reason, my primary teaching focus for physics will be electrodynamics, quantum physics and solid state physics. However, I can (and do) teach or tutor general physics, statistical thermodynamics, and mechanics topics. Unfortunately, I do not teach or tutor relativity topics.
Quantum Physics

Quantum Physics

I teach quantum mechanics from the perspective of differential equations (intermediate) and through algebraic structures (advanced, graduate level). I also provide tutorial for students. My sessions involve Q&A that can be answered on almost any subtopic.
Precalculus
SAT Math
Trigonometry

Expert and patient tutor who knows how to teach.

My son is taking a college physical chemistry course and to use my son's word - Darryl is "AMAZING". He explains the material (which covers physics and chemistry) very clearly and builds on the concepts so that my son has a true understanding of the underlying theories. Darryl comes incredibly prepared to each session, with problem sets he creates, and he maps out the sessions based on the class syllabus so that he is sure to cover the assigned material. He has turned what started as panic into understanding, confidence and enthusiasm. Thank you Darryl!

Tutor responded:

Hi Lia, thank you for this incredible review! It is my priority to make sure my students can connect concepts and make an attempt at mastery, so I am very happy to hear the sessions worked for your son.

Very professional tutor!

Darryl has given a great session on physics. He prepared well and made the session extremely efficient and helpful. I am sure he has spent time longer than the session to prepare for it. I feel fortunate to find Darryl as my tutor. Looking forward to working with him soon!

Great Teacher

Darryl definitely helped me understand physics and specifically vectors a lot better. He didn’t mind my dumb questions and he refreshed my memory on a lot of math steps. Overall it was great and I feel much more prepared for my exam.

Tutor responded:

Hi Madeline, Thanks for this excellent review. I am glad you feel more confident and have a better understanding of vectors. I hope you do well on your test!

Knew the material and didn't have to look stuff up to work the problems

I asked Darryl to work with my son after some other tutors who had a lot of excellent ratings were a huge disappointment. My son didn't want to watch someone struggle to figure out the harder questions from his high school STEM subjects again. That has happened with chemistry, physics, and calculus so far. We wanted someone who could instantly say, "Oh yeah, I know this stuff. You've got everything except this... " And could then explain it. So far we've found one chemistry tutor who taught IB Chemistry who was able to do that, and for physics, we now have Darryl. I'm actually hesitant to put this review in since it's hard to find the tutors who could teach the class, and I don't want Darryl to be swamped with requests and booked next time my son wants to schedule a review session.

Chemistry Homework Problem help

Darryl gave my son a full and detailed lesson on what to do for his homework problems. Now he understands them completely.

Very knowledgeable.

Great tutor! He is very articulate and provides a great initial background scope for each topic, which is pertinent in understanding. Darryl elicits patience and truly cares about whether you understand what you're doing.
