After a break from afterschool tutoring to raise my child, I am excited to return to Wyzant. I am a 2005 graduate of Roosevelt University (Education, Mathematics minor). I am also finishing a master’s in LBS1 Special Education.

This August I began my 17th year in the classroom as a math and science teacher, primarily serving neurodivergent youth from 7th–12th grade, with some late primary instruction as well. My students’ needs have ranged from profound learning disability to 99th percentile/gifted. I have extensive experience developing rapport and improving academic outcomes/test scores of students with BD, LD, ED, ASD, and OHI (ADHD).

As a tutor, about 1/3rd of my 250+ hours have been with students with disabilities, though most of my clients have sought support in regular/accelerated/AP courses or for ACT/SAT prep. Clients have seen score jumps up to 9 points on the ACT (≈300 on SAT), with final scores as high as 34 (~1540 SAT). I have also logged 25+ hours helping post-secondary adults prepare for basic skills exams in fields such as nursing and education, specializing in efficient, confidence-boosting improvements on math/science sections.
As a full-time teacher in a therapeutic day setting, I have taught and developed customized curricula at the high school level for math and science courses including Consumer Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry/Trigonometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Earth Science, Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology. All coursework was tailored to individual student strengths and covered the full slate of state standards.

I am flexible and happy to work around the days, times, and locations that best suit your schedule. I look forward to helping you achieve your academic goals!

Excellent ACT Tutor

My high school junior took a practice ACT exam in her sophomore year and her score was 17. She was so nervous she became incapable of comprehending the questions so she resorted to 'just filling in random answers.' She had always feared math and did poorly in all types of exams. After reading the various Tutor's bios available on Wyzant, and asking some questions, we decided to work with Ken based on his teaching experience and availability. We scheduled a total of 14 hours of tutoring during the course of a month. We met at the local library to keep distractions down to a minimum. At the first session, Ken and my daughter established a comfortable teacher/student relationship where Ken somehow was able to see when my daughter comprehended something or not and would provide easily understood explanations of math concepts and reading tips. My daughter found it easy to ask Ken questions without feeling 'dumb' and after EVERY tutoring session her confidence grew. Ken was always on time; came with prepared materials and lesson plans; knew exactly what to say to encourage and has transformed a student who had a math phobia into a confident, significantly less stressed student who is no longer dreading the ACT. My daughter is a TOTALLY DIFFERENT STUDENT because of Ken's ability to tutor in a non-judgmental, easy-mannered, non-threatening, highly approachable teaching style. My daughter won't be taking the ACT until next spring but having recently started the new school year, she has surprised her math teacher by participating in class and answering questions. Ironically, it is the same math teacher from last year who graded my daughter with a 'D', both semesters. We're excited to see how she does this fall and of course, when she takes the ACT. Most likely we'll arrange to work with Ken prior to the ACT for a refresher session. Thank you Ken! You exceeded our hopes and expectations!

An Experienced Tutor With A Lot of Patience

Ken has been teaching 5th grade Math to my son for the past four months. He started with the basics and quickly progressed to the current year's curriculum. It is apparent that Ken enjoys teaching kids and has a bag of tricks to keep them motivated and focused. My son looks forward to the classes and is now able to solve his homework problems on his own. We are extremely happy to have selected Ken and wholeheartedly recommend him.
