I believe that all children can learn, but sometimes they need to hear the material in a different way. A tutor needs to be able to present material in many different ways. I can do this. I am able to teach all ages from preschool thru adult. I can relate to the middle school student as well. I have been an educator for 31 years. I have been a tutor for 17 years. I have taught in the public school as well as private. I have worked with children in the formal and informal setting. I know my material and present it in easy to understand ways that are fun.

He recently took the test and scored a composite 30. His science was a 34 and English a 31. The best he had ever scored in English before Sara was a 28. She took the time to go over rules and strategies with him and it payed off. Thanks for all the time and effort you have given him.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I work with the children without emphasizing the disability. I stress what they are capable of doing and show the student ways to learn and do more. I work on the material that is needed to be doing well in school. I use the IEP (if there is one) as a guide for instruction.

As a tutor I have been working with all age students especially the K-6 grade children. I relate well with children and can communicate easily with them. I teach phonics, reading, math, science, social studies, and English. I enjoy their discovery that they can understand the material and their happiness in that understanding.
Children need to be taught in ways that keep their interest and words that they understand. My hope is that all children are at or above grade level and think learning new things is fun.
When teaching ESL, I work with the student to find out what is their goal(s). I then present material that will help the student reach that goal(s). I mix oral work with reading and writing to help the student learn English. To able to communicate effectively, the students need to be confident that people will be able to understand their speech so a lot of our class is oral. If a student has a specific vocabulary, we work on that vocabulary.
The assignments are chosen to meet the student’s needs. I will teach English grammar, word order, vocabulary, writing techniques and pronunciation. I have had success working with adult as well as children
I use various materials for my phonics program including Wilson phonics. I work with consonant and short vowel sound development as well as long vowel spellings. I teach the students about consonant blends, digraphs, and dipthongs as a part of my program. As the student develops an understanding of letter sounds, decoding of words is added to the program. Real words as well as nonsense words are used. I also use some sight word recognition. Many words are not pronounced phonically and need to be recognized rather than decoded. Many methods will be used including paper pencil exercises, dry erase marker assignments, dictation and reading of words, sentences, and stories. I work hard to keep the student invested in the program asa well as keeping the program diverse.
I have used these methods myself as a child to learn to read as well as using them for 15 years to help other children learn to read better. I am a teacher and tutor. I have tutored all ages in the phonics program. The students ages have varied from 5 years old to high school age.
