About Jeannie

I am an experienced teacher with 13 years of teaching high school English, drama, art history and speech communication. I also have five years of teaching middle school and high school reading to students who struggle with comprehension and fluency. I implemented the reading program at Reed-Custer High School in Braidwood, IL. I currently teach developmental reading and career development at SIUE.

I am certified in language arts, speech and reading in two states. I have a bachelor's degree in and am certified in speech communication and theater. I taught speech at the high school level for five years, and theater for 13 years. I have earned two master's degrees: one in curriculum and instruction, the other as a reading specialist. Not only can I help you with a variety of your English skills, but I can also help you with note taking, computer skills, proofreading, grammar and vocabulary, test prep, and study skills as well.

I value teaching that fits individual students' needs and learning styles. I believe that all students who want to learn can. Many students struggle with reading comprehension, test anxiety, spelling, writing, and vocabulary, no matter what their age. I work closely with students to uncover their academic needs, then work with them to discover what strengths they can use to overcome their struggles. I can also apply standardized testing to help identify reading levels and deficiencies.

I am generally available to tutor every weekday evening, and by appointment on Saturdays and Sundays. Please contact me and let me know how I can be of service to you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Intuitive and knowledgeable — This was our first session with Jeannie. She was very intuitive to our sons learning habits and gave a plan to enhance his test anxiety. We will continue to have sessions this summer and move into a PSAT testing plan. Our son had positive comments after the session. Thank you Jeannie! ...
