About Christopher

I have been an academic for about 11 years, completing university degrees in various fields as broad as geology, biology, philosophy, and theology. In addition, I have substitute taught high school science and led both a high school youth group and adult Bible Studies. My passion is knowledge, learning, and education. I will bring an attitude towards those I tutor which indicates that I believe they can learn the material not just for its own sake, but for daily life. I also believe that younger people learn more from those whom they can see as role models, and so I my methods are to be personable, but not too buddy-buddy. Firm, but not intolerant or unfeeling.

My methods are fairly straight-forward and simple. I usually begin with the textbook or material given to the student and try to find out what is expected of him/her and what they have done on their own before the meeting. From there, I can be very flexible. I can start by going through the book, or even by talking about the key concepts with examples from everyday life. I can even, given the circumstance, recommend a movie or book (age appropriate) that might illustrate well the concept we are discussing.

I look forward to helping you or your children succeed in life through the wonder of learning, including helping them acquire the tools and habits to life-long learners no matter what they end up doing.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

Apart from high school anatomy and physiology, I have completed a bachelor's degree in integrative biology wherein I completed a course in comparative vertebrate anatomy. Such comparisons can include human anatomy.

Bible Studies

I have an MA in theological studies from Luther Seminary, and am writing my thesis for the MTh in systematic theology from the same institution. Included in my coursework was Greek and Hebrew, and several Old and New Testament classes. I also took a class on biblical literature at the University of Illinois while an undergraduate there.

Biology

I received my BS from the University of Illinois in Integrative Biology in 2005. I further began and did not complete a MS in biology from Bradley University. My areas of focus were in comparative anatomy, zoology, evolutionary biology, and ecology.

French Horn

I tutored French Horn throughout high school where I held 1st chair in band for 3 years. Furthermore, I took college classes in applied brass for the French Horn for 2 semesters in junior high until my teacher passed away. I have not only made it to state orchestras, but have won Instrumentalist Magazine Musician of the Year Award (French Horn) in 2001 and continued to play for various religious contexts through college and up to 2 years ago.

Geology

I have completed a bachelor's degree in geology and have completed multiple laboratory and field classes. My undergraduate thesis was in the subfield of vertebrate paleontology.

Greek

I have a background in Koine Greek specifically and have not only applied it myself in several New Testament classes, but have also tutored several students in Seminary who were having trouble understanding the language. My typical approach to tutoring Greek is identical to Latin with the creation of vocabulary and declension cards.

On top of academic papers where the use of Greek is assumed, I have also tutored and helped others in various classes dealing with the use of Greek as a prerequisite.

Latin

I have taken 4 years of classical Latin (with appended history and culture) in high school. Further, I have taken two courses in Ecclesiastical Latin at the seminary level.

Philosophy

I have an AA in Philosophy and several graduate level classes in philosophical topics, most notably Phenomenology.

Religion

Religion and theology courses taken, with theology degree and philosophy degree conferred. Primarily Christian theological and religious background, but also competent with Abrhamaic religions (Islam from official coursework, and Judaism from other work within Christian theology field) and even Eastern religions. Some of the courses I have taken and excelled in include Philosophy of Religion, Comparative Religions, and Introduction to Islam.

Zoology

Apart from general biology courses, I have completed a bachelor's degree in integrative biology with my specialties being in evolutionary biology, zoology (particularly mammology and invertebrate zoology), comparative anatomy, and ecology.

Specific courses that I have completed pertaining directly to zoology are; Mammalogy (undergraduate), invertebrate zoology (graduate), and ichthyology (graduate).
