I am a licensed secondary social studies teacher with over 15 years of teaching experience and over two years of one-on-one tutoring experience. I hold an M.Ed. in Teaching & Learning in the Secondary Social Studies, and a B.A. in History and Political Science with minors in International Studies and Asian Studies. My teaching has included U.S. and World History, AP World History, AP Psychology, government and civics, economics, AP Human Geography, literature, and interdisciplinary humanities, as well as SAT preparation and college-application advising.

Over the years, I have worked with students ranging from elementary school through advanced high-school courses, including AP, honors, college-preparatory, and English-language-learning settings. That range has taught me that students can struggle with the same subject for very different reasons: gaps in content knowledge, difficulty organizing an argument, uncertainty about how to use evidence, weak study habits, or simply an explanation that has never quite made sense to them. I can help students identify the actual source of the difficulty and then work through it in a way suited to the individual student, whether the immediate goal is improving a paper, preparing for an AP exam, mastering difficult course material, or becoming a stronger reader and writer.

My tutoring approach begins by identifying what a student understands, where the difficulty actually lies, and what the course or assignment requires. I emphasize understanding rather than memorization: historical context, cause and effect, source analysis, evidence-based argument, and clear analytical writing. For AP and advanced students, I can help with content review, document analysis, essays, research, and the reasoning skills those courses demand. I adapt instruction to the individual student rather than relying on a scripted method, with the goal of helping students become more confident and increasingly independent in their work.

Approved Subjects

AFOQT

AFOQT

I earned an exceptionally strong result when I took the AFOQT myself, so I am familiar with both the demands of the examination and the importance of working efficiently under time pressure. My background includes more than 15 years of teaching history, social sciences, literature, writing, and test preparation, including SAT preparation. I can provide particular help with verbal analogies, vocabulary, reading comprehension, arithmetic reasoning, study strategy, pacing, and identifying patterns in missed questions. Preparation should be diagnostic rather than indiscriminate: we can determine where points are actually being lost and concentrate our time there.
American History

American History

secondary social studies teacher. I have extensive experience teaching American history and helping students understand historical events through primary and secondary sources rather than simple memorization. I emphasize historical context, cause and effect, evidence-based argument, and connections between U.S. history, government, politics, economics, and society. I also work with students on analytical essays, document analysis, research, and other history-based writing assignments.
Anthropology

Anthropology

My academic and teaching background spans history, political science, psychology, human geography, international studies, and Asian studies, all of which intersect substantially with anthropology. Over more than 15 years, I have taught students to examine societies comparatively and to consider how culture, institutions, environment, belief, and historical circumstance shape human behavior. I am particularly well suited to introductory anthropology and assignments involving cultural analysis, comparative societies, research, or writing. My approach emphasizes evidence and perspective without reducing unfamiliar cultures to convenient generalizations.
Archaeology

Archaeology

My principal expertise is history rather than professional archaeological practice, but archaeology is inseparable from serious study of the ancient world. I have taught ancient history, world history, mythology, and human geography and can help students understand how material evidence is used to reconstruct past societies. I am particularly useful for interpreting archaeological evidence alongside written sources and for helping students build evidence-based arguments from incomplete records. Students requiring highly technical instruction in excavation methods or laboratory archaeology would be better served by a specialist in those areas.
Art History

Art History

I hold an M.Ed. in Secondary Social Studies and a B.A. in History and Political Science with minors in International Studies and Asian Studies, and my teaching has long incorporated art, architecture, religion, literature, and material culture as historical evidence. At Idyllwild Arts Academy, I taught interdisciplinary humanities courses to students specializing in the visual and performing arts, which required placing creative works within their broader historical, intellectual, and cultural contexts. My approach to art history emphasizes close observation, historical context, symbolism, patronage, cultural exchange, and the relationship between artistic movements and the societies that produced them. I can help students move beyond identifying works and terminology toward explaining why works look as they do and what they reveal about their historical moment.
Classics

Classics

I have taught ancient history, mythology, literature, and world history as part of a teaching career spanning more than 15 years. My work includes Greek and Roman civilization, mythology, political institutions, religion, literature, and the wider ancient Mediterranean world. I approach the classical world as an interconnected historical culture rather than a collection of isolated names and dates. I can help students with content knowledge, primary-source interpretation, essays, comparative analysis, and the historical context behind classical texts.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing

My teaching background includes literature, mythology, Shakespeare, publications, and interdisciplinary humanities, as well as extensive work with students in an arts-focused boarding school. I can help writers develop structure, characterization, pacing, dialogue, clarity, and a more deliberate command of language while preserving the writer's own voice. My approach is particularly useful for students who have ideas but struggle to shape them into coherent prose. I also bring the perspective of a literature teacher who can explain why particular narrative choices succeed or fail.
Criminal Justice

Criminal Justice

My background in history and political science, together with more than 15 years teaching government and the social sciences, provides a strong foundation for work in criminal justice. I can help students understand courts, constitutional principles, governmental institutions, public policy, civil liberties, and the historical development of American legal and political systems. I am particularly useful for assignments requiring students to analyze evidence, competing interpretations, or the relationship between law and society. For highly specialized upper-level criminal justice coursework, I would first review the course requirements to determine whether I am the appropriate tutor.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

Analytical essay writing has been central to my history, literature, government, psychology, and humanities courses for more than 15 years. I teach students to move from a question to a clear argument, organize evidence deliberately, develop paragraphs that actually advance that argument, and revise prose for precision. I am equally comfortable helping a student begin an essay or diagnosing why an existing draft is not working. I also have extensive experience helping English-language learners strengthen academic writing while preserving what they are trying to say.
European History

European History

I hold an M.Ed. in Secondary Social Studies and a B.A. in History and Political Science with minors in International Studies and Asian Studies. My extensive experience teaching AP World History, Modern World History, and other advanced history courses includes substantial coverage of European political, intellectual, social, religious, and economic history from the medieval period through the modern era. I emphasize historical context, causation, comparison, continuity and change, primary-source analysis, and evidence-based argument. I can also help students with document analysis, historical essays, research, and the skills required for advanced and AP-level history coursework.
Geography

Geography

I hold an M.Ed. in Secondary Social Studies and a B.A. in History and Political Science with minors in International Studies and Asian Studies. I have taught Human Geography as a dedicated secondary course and bring extensive experience connecting geography to history, economics, politics, culture, migration, development, and international affairs. My broader AP and advanced social-science experience allows me to help students analyze geographic patterns, interpret maps and data, understand human-environment relationships, and connect spatial processes to real-world developments. I also work with students on analytical writing, research, vocabulary, and the application of geographic concepts to unfamiliar examples.
Government & Politics

Government & Politics

I hold a B.A. in History and Political Science and an M.Ed. in Secondary Social Studies, and I am a licensed secondary social studies teacher. I have taught government and civics as well as advanced social-science courses including AP World History, AP Human Geography, and AP Psychology, and I have developed materials across AP, IB, and A-Level frameworks. My instruction emphasizes political institutions, elections, public policy, comparative systems, evidence evaluation, and applying political concepts to real-world cases. I also help students with analytical writing, research, source evaluation, and advanced secondary or introductory college political science coursework.
Literature

Literature

I have taught literature for many years alongside history and the humanities, including senior literature courses, Shakespeare, mythology, and interdisciplinary humanities. My approach emphasizes close reading, interpretation, historical and cultural context, and the ability to support an argument with specific textual evidence. I can help students work through difficult texts, develop stronger literary analysis, and turn their ideas into clear, well-supported essays. I am particularly useful for students who understand what they have read but struggle to explain precisely why it matters.
Political Science

Political Science

I hold a B.A. in History and Political Science and an M.Ed. in Secondary Social Studies, and I am a licensed secondary social studies teacher. I have extensive experience teaching government, civics, political institutions, elections, public policy, and the relationship between political systems and historical development. My approach emphasizes understanding how institutions actually function, comparing competing interpretations, evaluating evidence, and applying political concepts to real-world examples. I can also help students with analytical essays, research assignments, source evaluation, and preparation for advanced high school or introductory college political science coursework.
Psychology

Psychology

I have taught AP Psychology as part of a broader career of more than 15 years in secondary education, including courses in history, government, economics, literature, and the social sciences. My psychology teaching emphasizes understanding theories and research rather than simply memorizing terminology, with particular attention to applying concepts accurately to unfamiliar situations. I can help students with AP Psychology content, FRQs, research methods, vocabulary, test preparation, and the connections between psychological ideas and human behavior. My broader humanities and social-science background also helps students see psychology as a discipline rather than a collection of disconnected definitions.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

As a teacher for more than 15 years, I have spent much of my professional life speaking before groups and helping students learn to do the same. My classes emphasize discussion, argumentation, presentations, and the ability to explain complicated ideas clearly under questioning. I have also delivered professional-development presentations for other educators. I can help students improve organization, delivery, confidence, use of evidence, and their ability to speak naturally rather than simply reciting a prepared script.
Religion

Religion

Religion has been an important part of my teaching throughout courses in world history, ancient history, government, literature, and the humanities. I help students examine religious traditions in their historical, political, philosophical, and cultural contexts while distinguishing careful analysis from either advocacy or dismissal. My academic background in history, political science, international studies, and Asian studies also allows me to approach religious traditions comparatively. I am particularly useful for students studying religion as part of history, civilization, literature, or social studies coursework.
Social Studies

Social Studies

I hold an M.Ed. in Secondary Social Studies and a B.A. in History and Political Science with a minor in International Studies, and I am a licensed secondary social studies teacher. My teaching experience spans history, government and civics, economics, psychology, geography, political science, and interdisciplinary humanities. I help students understand connections among these fields while developing skills in source analysis, evidence-based reasoning, research, and analytical writing. I adapt instruction to the student's course, assignments, and individual areas of difficulty.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

I have spent more than 15 years teaching students how to turn broad subjects into focused questions, defensible theses, and sustained arguments. My courses regularly require research, source evaluation, evidence-based writing, and substantial revision, including National History Day-style research projects. I can help students refine a research question, determine what their evidence actually supports, organize a longer paper, and identify weaknesses in an argument. My goal is not to write the thesis for the student, but to help the student construct one that can withstand scrutiny.
United States History

United States History

I hold an M.Ed. in Secondary Social Studies and a B.A. in History and Political Science, and I am a licensed secondary social studies teacher. I have extensive experience teaching U.S. history, including political, social, economic, diplomatic, and cultural developments across American history. I emphasize primary-source analysis, historical context, causation, continuity and change, and evidence-based argument rather than simple memorization. I can also assist with essays, document analysis, research assignments, and advanced high school history coursework.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

More than 15 years of teaching history, literature, and the social sciences has required me to help students master unfamiliar academic vocabulary and use it precisely. I emphasize understanding words through context, roots, usage, and the ideas behind them rather than simple memorization. I have considerable experience helping English-language learners expand both academic and practical vocabulary. I can also help students improve diction and word choice in their own writing.
World History

World History

I hold an M.Ed. in Secondary Social Studies and a B.A. in History and Political Science with a minor in International Studies, and I have extensive experience teaching World History, including AP World History. My advanced-course work also includes AP Human Geography and AP Psychology, along with curriculum development across AP, IB, and A-Level frameworks. I teach students to analyze historical developments through comparison, causation, continuity and change, contextualization, and close examination of primary and secondary sources. I can help with content mastery, document analysis, essays, research, and the historical reasoning skills required in advanced and AP-level coursework.
Writing

Writing

I have spent more than 15 years teaching students to express complex ideas clearly and support them with evidence. My history, literature, government, and social science courses have required substantial instruction in organization, argumentation, revision, source use, and academic style. I have worked extensively with both native English speakers and English-language learners, helping students strengthen their writing without replacing their individual voice. I can assist with everything from developing an argument to revising a nearly finished paper.
