Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

In May of 2008 I received my AA in Elementary Education from University of Phoenix. I continued with their program and in June of this year I received my BS in Elementary Education. In order to complete my Bachelor's degree, I was required to do 12 weeks of Student Teaching. During these 12 weeks, as well as all during my college studies, I had to create lesson plans, work with learning groups, plan tests, review local state, and national information - all pertaining to students in the classroom. This is why I believe I am qualified for this subject. Thank you.

ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

In my 3+ years with Wyzant, the majority of my tutoring has been Language Arts based. I am currently qualified in 16 subjects, 12 of which are Language Arts based. My degree is in Elementary Education, with a focus on Language Arts. I did my student teaching at Lee Elementary in Chicago - a primarily Hispanic ESL/ELL school. I was in charge of a First Grade class with 34 students - all of whom were ESL/ELL to some degree.
Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel

I began using Lotus 123 (Excel's predecessor) in 1989. Work with it daily in my current job (which I've been at for 16 years), and used all forms of Excel in my 29-year professional career. Considered an Advanced user. Familiar with Conditional formatting, Subtotals, Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP, IF statements, and MS Excel's Visual Basic Editor.
Phonics

Phonics

My student teaching (2/4/13 - 5/3/13) was done at Lee Elementary near Midway Airport in Chicago. Lee is 95% Hispanic and I student taught First Grade - ESL/ELL. Because my educational focus has been on English & Literature, I focused a lot of my personal efforts in the class on this. Each day in class we would have groups. My task was to sit with different groups of students every day and help them understand sounds, letters, and how these came together to form words. I used multiple tools off the internet as well as the Phonics worksheets that my cooperating teacher would give me.

Study Skills

Study Skills

I completed 12 weeks of student teaching from 2/4/2013 - 5/3/2013 to qualify for my BS in Elementary Education which I received in June 2013. For my student teaching I had to create a teacher portfolio. My portfolio detailed various study methods that I planned to use and did use with the students in my class. Now tutoring with WyzAnt, I continue to share study skills with my students. Some of these examples include: grouping (taking a large subject and breaking it down into smaller groups or like sub-subjects to make it easier to study), mnemonics for remembering lists, game play/songs to recall a story or certain point, flash cards, and writing and re-writing.
Writing

Writing

I started working full-time professionally in 1989. Since then I have held only 3 jobs. In each of these jobs my primary focus has been customer service. In each of these jobs, I have also had to do a great deal of writing. Business letters, promotions, requests, emails and so forth. In addition to writing professionally, I also do so personally. I submitted a poem to Poetry.com that won a contest (the prize being an iPod Nano!).

Amazing on what she does!

Ms Paulla's manner of teaching is so wonderful and refreshing!! She’s patient and supportive, but really knows how to motivate my son. She’s great at building confidence and keeping lessons fun and engaging through a variety of activities that improve conversation and reading skills. I would definitely recommend her and we are so blessed to have her.

Paulla Was Great!

She set up a new laptop computer for my 75 year old mother who requires much patience and understanding for her learning ability. I highly recommend her service!

Tutor who loves tutoring

English is my second language and Paulla really helped me to get into it. Our lessons lasted six months and unfortunately we have to terminate our learning because I'm relocating to another state. All lessons were very flexible and customized: we never got stuck with some predefined plan, but instead Paulla was always ready to explain me everything that is not obvious in English and we were free to deviate from the general line and spend time on exploring something interesting - some particular language features or some facts from the American culture or history or whatever else.

Tutor responded:

Thanks Olga! I know it's tough to be in school, have a family and home life, do your studies, and try to learn English too. You're doing great and I promise to give you my best attention!

Great English tutor

Paulla pays a lot of attention to my mistakes in ACT English practice exams or just in general. After our meetings I felt more sure of myself than I was before. Much THANKS to her. I'm sure Paulla's help will give you the best result on the ACT exam!! Thank you, Paulla!

Don't sell yourself short Julian. You're very smart and a great student!

Very patient!

I have a daughter who can be sometimes shy to strangers but Paulla was able to reach my daughter and my daughter actually enjoys Paulla's visits. She is extremely patient and knowledgeable with her understanding math. Paulla is reaching my daughter and helping her to understand math where others have failed. Thanks Paulla!!

Tutor responded:

I'm delighted to be of help and I love working with your daughter. She's very kind and polite. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity!

Very Patient

I'm glad Paulla is on board to help my daughter with her Math. My daughter was diagnosed with PDD (Pervasive Developmental Delay)as well as anxiety. She is a very normal-bright girl, just took a little longer in hitting certain "Milestones." Paulla is very patient with her, and my daughter likes her a lot. It's great to have Paulla as part of her support team. Thanks.

Tutor responded:

Your daughter is very kind, respectful, and quite artistically talented! I enjoy working with her. My goal is to combine her love of art/drawing with Math to help her learn! Wanda is a fantastic "hands on" mom scholastically speaking when it comes to her daughter's needs. She's great at providing detail and direction for what her daughter needs help with.

Incredible Teacher

She is a wonderful Teacher. Every time she surprises me. She always brings new learning materials. I am so lucky. Thank God I found her. Thank you.

F. Leyla, 19 lessons with Paulla
Tutor responded:

Leyla is a great student. Willing to learn, giving her all, and open. I believe that teachers should forever be students themselves. I also believe if a teacher's mind is open, he or she can learn from his or her students. I certainly have already learned from Leyla!
