I have tutored K-8 math and science, SSAT and selective enrollment test prep, General Mathematics, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Chemistry and Physics. I have also helped high school students prepare for ACT and SAT college entrance exams as well as adults for GED. In addition, I have helped students improve their writing as well as become better readers. I am currently an upper-level mathematics instructor for Kumon.

I understand the importance of teaching content, but more important are the human virtues that are instilled through tutoring like a sense of pride for good work, a certain order and discipline to complete tasks, a thirst for knowledge and understanding instead of simply trying to complete tasks.

In tutoring I first create a comfortable environment by establishing a genuine repartee. Tutoring should always be light and fun, and when good humor and a genuine interest in the learner are present, it facilitates engagement. I also instill good work and study habits by modeling such and by insisting students work carefully and thoroughly, check the reasonableness of their answers, show their reasoning, think about problems in more than one way, etc.

Most importantly though, my success is rooted in planning together with parents and communicating each step of the way. I am a learner first and recognize that the needs of the parents in meeting the goals you have set for your child are of paramount importance and a good working relationship is essential in order to meet the goals set as well as update and revise them as needed.

In addition, I generally begin with the student’s curriculum but am armed with a plethora of educational resources to support deep conceptual understanding. I also believe that good questioning is critical to help student

Spanish

I am a native Spanish speaker and have taught Spanish language to students as a class and also tutoring. I have taught it as a language and in the content area (taught math in Spanish). Spanish is my first language and I am proud to share it with others. I also enjoy having conversations with my nieces and nephews in Spanish, even though they do not know Spanish fluently.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked with students in reading and writing (3rd-5th grades) and am a firm believer that students learn reading and writing organically when they have opportunities to read what they like, can share what they know by writing, drawing, expression. The students I have worked with were eager to learn because they were sharing what the learned with others. They also became good readers and shared books and stories they enjoyed with one another. Reading and writing is easier when it is meaningful and about shared meanings.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

As an elementary math teacher and tutor I teach students conceptually, which means they do not have to relearn each year. I feel algorithms are important in learning math but learning how mathematics is developed is equally important for a good, solid understanding. These skills transfer to advanced mathematics. As you can see, I am a teacher and tutor of middle school and high school mathematics as well. In teaching and tutoring elementary math I feel that representations (pictures, drawing, manipulatives) are important as well as writing and proof in mathematics. I am a constructivist/Vygostky philosophically and believe that all students can achieve deep understandings of math as long as the learning environment promotes it.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have taught/tutored in Algebra 1 and believe the best way to learn is by developing the concepts being learned. I also feel it is important to follow where students are, because they know a lot already, and build from there. My style is Socratic/Vygotskian and stresses practice built on understanding.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I have taught/tutored in Algebra 2 and enjoy helping students understand math. I am a constructivist building on what students know and helping them discover and self-regulate. I am a firm believer on solid conceptual understanding and feel this is so important in math. In other words simple memorization is not the best method to learn.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

I have tutored in Chemistry and enjoy the subject. I teach science and mathematics conceptually and feel that when you understand what and why you are doing something, simply memorizing is not helpful and unnecessary. I have always been drawn to Chemistry because of its' discrepant events (you don't always understand right away what you observe). I also can provide resources to help.

Physics

I have tutored students in Physics and am skilled in helping students understand how the laws of motion work. These include kinematics, energy, simple harmonic motion, momentum, gravitation, circular motion, waves, and electrostatics. I am able to apply the mathematics (calculus) involved in physics to show how the concepts and laws of motion are derived.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I am an experienced Prealgebra teacher and have tutored students in the subject. I believe that it is important to develop math concepts by using manipulatives, drawing, proof, etc. Mathematics is knowledge under construction and once developed is always there.

Math

ACT Math,

ACT Math

I have taught ACT Math courses and also high school math. I build on strong conceptual understanding (Socratic and Vygotskian) to instill retention and know-how. I believe when students understand well they won't forget. I also stress mathematical proof, drawing (show what you know) and mathematical argument. A solid foundational in mathematics is fundamental for further work in mathematics and sciences.

Trigonometry

I enjoy teaching and tutoring in Trigonometry as well as other mathematics classes. Trigonometry is more easily understood when one understands how the definition are derived. I always emphasize the unit circle and everything else pretty falls into place. I am a conceptual learner and therefore I promote deep conceptual understanding in my teaching/tutoring. I believe in a Socratic method of learning which involves instructional conversation that enables the learner to learn within proximity of their understanding (Vygotstky). Trigonometry has always been one of the math classes I have enjoyed teaching/tutoring the most.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

After 3 sessions, our son is already understanding Algebra 2 so much better with Gabriel. He has a big test next week and I have no doubt that Gabriel will help him with any confusion he has in preparation. So thankful to have found him!

excellent teacher

Gabriel is helping my daughter with ISEE prep and we focused on quantitative reasoning for the math section. He helped guide her through the questions and she came up with the answers. I like his style in he’s kind but direct and that he gets right to the point and helps them understand what they need to work on in the lesson and after the lesson. I highly recommend. Thank you!

Professional teacher

Gabriel is a pro at math tutoring. My daughter is enjoying Algebra sessions with Gabriel and says it really helps with the instructions at school. Some tutors are really smart at the subject matter on Wyzant but do not know how to convey the materials. Gabriel knows how to present the materials in an orderly fashion. He also know how to answer questions. He is a teacher by trade and this is very valuable. We are now signed up with G regularly so our daughter can have a great resource at hand for Algebra.

Dana, 4 lessons with Gabriel

Great teacher.

Katie had a good, productive lesson with Gabriel yesterday. He prepared her for a test, in which she scored 100% today

Nadya, 2 lessons with Gabriel

Very knowledgeable!!

My daughter really enjoyed working with Mr. Gabriel. He was very patient and knowledgeable. He really helped her understand algebra at a slower pace and my daughter is looking forward to her next tutoring lesson.

Mahwish, 7 lessons with Gabriel

Helpful teacher!

We had a great first lesson with Gabriel and he helped my daughter make a lot of progress. I liked his approach on teaching and I’m looking forward to the next lesson!

Great rapport. Very intelligent and skilled with delivery!

Exceeded expectations by far. My son is actually looking forwarded to his next session! We were very ill prepared but Gabriel didn't seem to miss a beat. As parents we are feeling a sense of relief that we have never had before!

Suzanne, 8 lessons with Gabriel

Excellent Tutor

My 7th grader loved working with Gabriel. Gabriel was very friendly, patient and encouraging. My son learned a lot just from one lesson. We are looking forward to working with Gabriel every week.
