Hello! Bonjour ! ¡Hola! 안녕하세요! こんにちは! مرحبا! Kumusta!

I’m Genecah Shimrone E. Pike, an English and foreign language teacher and the founder of Pike Language Institute and Pike Bookshop & Co. I have taught adult English learners in Berkeley, California, and Chicago, Illinois, as well as children and adults internationally through online instruction. I enjoy helping students develop confidence and discover the joy of learning languages.

My educational background includes studies at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, Oregon State University, Los Angeles City College, and Glendale Community College, focusing on English, French, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, Linguistics, and Anthropology. I hold a 120-hour certificate in teaching English as a foreign language. I have also studied Lebanese and Syrian Arabic for approximately eight years, including studies at Lebanese American University. My future academic goals include pursuing a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics at the University of Massachusetts Boston, followed by a PhD at Boston University.

I have tutored on Wyzant for approximately five years and maintain a five-star rating. I prepare structured lessons using textbooks, grammar exercises, vocabulary activities, and conversational practice, adapting each lesson to my students’ individual needs and goals. I believe that patience, encouragement, and a welcoming learning environment are essential to meaningful progress.

Wishing you all the best on your language-learning goals,
Ms. Pike

Approved Subjects

Arabic

Arabic

I am an Arabic major at California University of Pennsylvania, potentially I want to be an Arabic teacher when I graduate. I also speak Levantine Arabic (Syrian Damascene and Lebanese dialects) and have earned certificates in both accents. Most Arabic native speakers would confused me for a native Arabic speaker because of my near perfect native Arabic accent. I also have experience in teaching both Arabic and English as a foreign language.
English

English

Bachelor in English degree with a teaching certificate in English as a foreign language. Have taught English to both children and adult learners.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I am an ESL instructor based in Illinois. I have ESL teaching experience with both Adults and children English language learners.
French

French

Bonjour. I teach standard academic French (France) / Parisian accent. Be confident that you are learning French from a French teacher! I am an American with French (north and west European) heritage in my father's side and Filipino with Hispanic roots in my mother's side. I am French Educated, all my private teachers are from Paris and I also studied standard French at the university. For my teaching materials, I use the Saison méthode de français and L'atelier collection of books (which are used by the Alliance Française French schools). I use Google slides, Powerpoint, PDF, other books, videos, Pimsleur, and more sources. I offer audio lessons that are very effective. I also encourage my students to use Quizlet flashcards. Book a session with me, you won't regret it. Merci.
Korean

Korean

I am a graduate of both Yonsei University and Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea, where I completed advanced-level Korean language college courses. I lived in South Korea for two years, immersed myself in the culture, and married a Korean. We have a daughter together who is Korean, and I am her biological mother, so Korean is a natural and essential part of my daily life. I’ve been teaching Korean at a language school for over a year and am currently pursuing certification to teach Korean as a second language. I completed advanced college-level Korean coursework at both Yonsei University and Sungkyunkwan University.
Spanish

Spanish

I am currently double majoring in Spanish and French at Oregon State University, pursuing minors in Linguistics and Japanese, and completing Korean language micro-credentials. Additionally, I am pursuing a bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in French at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. I have five years of teaching and tutoring experience in Spanish, French, and English, working with students of different ages, backgrounds, and proficiency levels. As a Filipino American with a deep appreciation for my Spanish-Filipino heritage, my connection to the Spanish language extends beyond the classroom. I was raised in Cebu, Philippines, by my grandmother, who received a Spanish-influenced education. Growing up surrounded by traditions, cuisine, and cultural influences rooted in the Philippines’ shared history with Spain inspired my lifelong appreciation for the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures. My academic studies and cultural background have strengthened my understanding of Spanish grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and communication. I particularly appreciate the linguistic and cultural connections between Spain and the Philippines. As the founder and language instructor of Pike Language Institute, I develop structured Spanish lessons that incorporate grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, listening comprehension, pronunciation, and conversational practice. My teaching approach emphasizes a strong grammatical foundation while encouraging students to communicate naturally and confidently. I believe learning Spanish is not simply about memorizing vocabulary and grammatical rules; it is also an opportunity to discover the history, traditions, and cultures that make the Spanish-speaking world so fascinating. Wishing you all the best in your language-learning journey!
Tagalog

Tagalog

I am a certified Tagalog Filipino language teacher. I am a native Filipina, born in Cebu, Philippines, and a native speaker of both Tagalog and Cebuano. As a Filipino, I was already fluent in Tagalog before entering school. I completed my elementary education in the Philippines, where I studied Tagalog for six years as part of the national curriculum. I also spent one year of high school at St. Joseph High School in Cebu, where I continued studying Tagalog, followed by one year of college at St. Theresa’s College in Cebu City, where I completed college-level Tagalog language coursework. After moving to California, I graduated from both middle school and high school and later earned my college degree in the United States. I then moved to South Korea, where I taught both Tagalog and English to Korean students and completed Korean language programs at Yonsei University and Sungkyunkwan University. I have been tutoring Tagalog in California for the past three years and hold a certificate in teaching Tagalog as a second language. I teach both Tagalog and Cebuano and am passionate about helping students learn Filipino languages through clear, culturally grounded instruction. As a native speaker with lifelong education in Tagalog, from early childhood through university, I bring both fluency and formal training to my teaching.

Geneca genuinely wants you to succeed. She's encouraging, optimistic and her passion for the language is apparent. She provided numerous resources for additional practice, flash cards for the completed lesson and ensured understanding and correct pronunciation. An absolute breath of fresh air.
