Bio

Hello future student! I'm Eric. Though I call myself a composer, my path in music has never been a straight or predictable one. Through the years, I have thoroughly pursued varying musical interests ranging from music theory and composition, jazz, polyrhythmic cycles, sound engineering and sound design, guitar and piano. Because I refuse to reduce the wonders of music down to a single way of thinking, my approach has involved a mix of rigorous self-teaching, private instruction, work experience and academic schooling, through a Music major at the University of Pennsylvania and a sound engineering degree at a school in New York. I hope to instill my students with an attitude that balances a holistic view of music with a serious investigation of particular musical world-views.

Great teachers have been absolutely crucial in my own development, and from them I've learned how to transmit musical knowledge in an engaging and effective manner. I will base my approach off your own musical goals and interests, then I'll show how they relate to a broader musical vocabulary and together we'll zero in on specific concepts to work on. For example, we can use a song that you're interested in learning as a starting point to dive into concepts like harmony or form, and we'll develop an understanding of these concepts that will enrich your experiences with music in the future.

A real music mentor

I have been Eric's student for a month now, with results that overstep expectations. Eric has developed a method that is uniquely didactic, based on passionate and fun live sessions paired with rigorous exercises I do during the week. Thanks to this dual approach, he is able to share insights during our lessons that are grounded in a solid understanding of musical structure while arming me with the skills and experience to experiment, improvize, and create my own music. Eric is one of a kind, many teachers will teach students the basics to spew out a raspy tune while pocketing your change, but he will ensure that the student is able to chart his own way through the musical realm while being grounded in harmonic structure. No magic: Eric simply cares a lot, he checks and provides valuable feedback on my exercises and composition, while being a perfect partner to learn my way around the guitar. Here is a teacher that works with his heart, not his brain! And it's sufficiently rare that I write a long review!!
