Hi, my name is Daniel. I have a master's degree in education and have been a certified special education teacher working in the Chicagoland area for 13 years. As a distinguished special education teacher, I have worked with a wide range of students in various settings. I am a certified Orton Gillingham tutor and am passionate about teaching struggling students how to read. Based on overwhelming research, this requires the use of an explicit or synthetic approach to phonics. I have many years of experience using the Wilson Phonics Program and the Orton-Gillingham approach and have seen tremendous student growth. These programs utilize a multi-sensory approach to reading, phonics, and spelling. I provide all materials and, additionally, model for parents a daily reading routine. Most importantly, I value the relationships that I build with students: I truly believe that positive relationships are instrumental for student growth! There is no better feeling than experiencing the transformation of struggling students as they learn to read!

I'm an excellent K-8 tutor because I have a large toolbox, I understand key developmental milestones, have worked with a wide range of students, and know, most importantly, how to keep students motivated! I have a master's degree in special education and a thorough understanding of the K-6 curriculum and how to meet the needs of students, especially those that are struggling. Whether it's language arts, math, science, social studies or executive functioning, I have a myriad of tools to enable students to feel successful and, most importantly, to grow in their academic achievement. I have an an in-depth understanding of reading strategies-both comprehension and phonics based. I am a big proponent of using the Wilson Program if phonics and/or dyslexia is an issue. If writing is difficult, we can break down the assignment into smaller chunks with graphic organizers and sentence starters. In this same way, we can break down multi-step math problems through visualization, highlighting and talking about what the problem is asking. Whatever the issue is, I will have research-based solution that ensures student growth.

For the past several years, I've worked extensively with students that use various Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices (AAC)--including eye-gaze devices. I am well-versed in Aided Language Stimulation, Partner Assisted Scanning, Recasting, and a variety of high and low-tech strategies in order to successfully meet the needs of students. I typically use the 4 block literacy model when teaching AAC users. Most importantly, I value the relationships that I am able to build with students. I truly believe that positive relationships with students is instrumental to their academic growth! Additionally, I have worked with a wide variety of special needs students including students with the following: Learning Disability, Dyslexia, Autism, Rhett's Syndrome, ADHD, Emotional Behavioral Disorder, Cognitive Delayed, Developmental Delay and Other Health Impairments. I have worked with students in inclusive settings and in general education settings. Fantastic with special needs!

Daniel is wonderful at explaining things to my daughter. He makes sure she is fully understanding the concepts. Able to help her make sense of things and learn in a way her teachers do not. Highly recommend for kids who don’t learn well via traditional means!

Fantastic

Daniel is a fantastic math tutor for our kiddo with ASD. In a matter of a few lessons, he was able to help him grasp several math concepts that has been challenging to him in the past. He uses several teaching tools and worksheets and has a matter of fact approach that kept our kid focused in the entire session.
