I am an American mother of two who began studying Chinese in high school. After majoring in Asian Studies in college, I then moved to Taiwan to solidify my language learning. This led me to purse a higher degree in Asian languages so I earned my Master's degree and tutored undergraduates at the same time. I moved to Mainland China in the early 1990s and stayed 5 years. My experience working and traveling in a complete immersion environment helped me to reach a near-native fluency level. I later moved back to Greater China and stayed another 13 years.
What I love about tutoring Chinese to native English-speaking students is the fact that I can help them understand the why's, the rules, the differences, the mnemonics, and the nuances of Chinese language much more effectively as an American who has absorbed the language first-hand and whose native language is English. I love seeing the students' interest in Chinese language and culture.

I believe I offer something very different to most tutors of Chinese. I am not a native speaker, but I believe this fact benefits a native English-speaking student to better understand the language and the sounds. I began my Chinese learning as a teenager, majored in it at university earning my B.A. I spent time in Asia before obtaining my Master's degree in Asian languages. I then moved back to China for almost two decades. Few Americans have experienced what I have from a language learning and teaching perspective and I think my specialized experience and knowledge will benefit students who want to begin studies or advance their skills in Mandarin Chinese.

I have approximately 8 years in higher level academia. During this time I have had to write, read, review many papers and have developed an automatic eye for error in syntax, grammar, and spelling. I can read quickly and type even faster, therefore making editorial corrections now written work is my strength.
