As a practiced classroom setting early childhood educator I understand fully the development of a child and how critical a solid foundation leads to academic success. I believe in the elementary ages there is a critical disconnect between children’s foundational learning skills, and their frustrations with a heavily standardized system. As a tutor I believe challenging children to be themselves and use their interests, as well as creativity is key to building children’s confidence to critically solve complex problems in academics.

My success as a math teacher for young children is rooted in showing children that step by step fundamentals in math should not only be connected to them in unique ways, like games, and activities, but that sitting down with a workbook should build your confidence or desire to push harder, not deplete it. Gaining skills in basics such as numerosity and subitization for example will build on skills needed to explore more complex elementary math. These skillsets in my practice should always be challenging as they are fun.

Science should not just be about terminology and passing the test. In elementary science we as tutors and educators should encourage children to understand that their inquiry and unique solutions for complex problem solving is what makes them a scientist. Elementary aged children should be encouraged to understand that engaging in scientific terminology and practices is much about understanding how the processes work, and how to interpret the information given.

I understand children as diverse learners and each capable and unique in captivating ways. Working with children with exceptional abilities requires that we look at their skills and abilities as assets not detriments. It requires that we learn more of development and the processes that allow all children regardless of need the opportunities to engage academically in a way that is consistent with their unique development.

I encourage any parent or student to reach out to me and explore opportunities t
