I have been teaching for the past ten years, and I love giving students individualized attention through tutoring. With our large class sizes, this is sometimes difficult to accomplish every day. I was a bilingual student as a child and I definitely understand the frustrations of students who are learning English as a second language or who are generally not understanding a topic. My strength is that I am able to break down difficult concepts into easy to understand pieces. I believe in the I do, We Do, You Do philosophy of teaching, so that students will receive a mini-lesson from me, followed by an example that we do together, and the lesson concludes with independent work. In that manner, students will have three opportunities to understand the concept.
What makes me a great Math tutor is that I grew up hating Math! Over the course of my education, I have come to appreciate and master the subject for its logic and relevant application to real life. However, my own math instruction was about drilling facts and rules into my head. I believe that students should understand why they are learning a particular math equation, and I try to place assignments in their real-world context. I am also good at breaking down the problem into steps so that students can follow the logic.
Science was my undergraduate major at Harvard College, and I subsequently pursued a Masters in Public Health before becoming an elementary school teacher. My particular strength is in the Biological Sciences. As a teacher, I have taught middle grades science to 6-8 graders, and am very familiar with earth science, physical science and biological science.
I grew up in a family that taught me Italian as my first language. I also took four years of high school Italian and three years of college level Italian. My second semester of Junior year was spent studying in Florence, where I studied Italian Language and Art.
