Hi, I’m Garrett!

I am a math and test preparation tutor with over 10 years of experience. I have taught one-on-one, small groups, and whole classrooms. Over the years, I have helped dozens of students achieve their goals, whether they wanted to review Algebra fundamentals, ease the transition into college math, or get a perfect score on the SAT.

I received my bachelor’s degree in mathematics and my master’s in teaching at the University of Virginia. Then I taught high school math, before moving on to work with a nonprofit organization focused on college access. There, my students regularly achieved 150+ point score increases on the SAT. Now, I am a PhD student in the Learning Sciences at the University of Illinois Chicago. My studies focus on the teaching and learning of mathematics, ensuring that I am up to date on the best practices for tutoring.

My strongest skill as a tutor is listening. I try to really understand my students’ thinking so I can meet them where they are and build a bridge to deeper understanding. I personalize each session for the student I am working with, building from what they already understand to help them reach the next level. All students are capable of success, and my goal is to help them build their confidence alongside their math abilities.
