I first started enjoying math when I was in middle school. My teacher influenced the way I understood the material and she took pride in the subject, as I do now. After several, advanced, college-level math courses, I graduated college with more than just an Economics degree: I left with a love for math.
I began tutoring calculus and prealgebra to high school students while at college. Most recently, I've tutored several high school students while employed at a national learning center. Here, I tutored primarily SAT Math prep. Over the year as a tutor, I saw several students improve their PSAT and SAT math scores. Seeing my students grow as learners and improve as students is one of my dearest accomplishments.
As a tutor, I have taught students within a wide range of understanding of math. I specifically specialize in middle school math concepts plus high school level geometry, precalculus, calculus and SAT Math prep. So, whether you are in great need of one-on-one guidance or simply require review, I aim to facilitate breakthroughs that occur from within, on the student's terms. Simply pointing out errors or revealing answers would--I found--preclude understanding; instead, I employ a student's reading comprehension (and I will help with that as needed) and re-read problems (always out loud), consider applicable concepts, and speak his or her thought processes. These steps tell me more about a student's tendencies, which help me to tailor sessions most effectively. All the while, a student acquires a deeper understanding of the material.
My goal as a tutor is to ensure a student's understanding and application of math concepts. I will be patient until we reach that goal together!
My schedule is very flexible with a 12-hour cancellation policy and I can meet at a student's home or at another location, whichever is convenient and comfortable for the student. I'm happy and willing to travel to wherever Chicago public transit can take me.
I look forward to helping students better understand math. A little prac
