I am an educator of English as well as Spanish and Latin dance. I have my masters in Secondary education with certificates in ESL, Bilingual, and middle grades education. My studies and 12+ years of experience teaching English internationally and in the Chicagoland area and suburbs have provided me with invaluable insight into what students need to succeed in different learning environments and the necessary tools to help them achieve their goals.

As a public school educator, my students’ test scores as well as my leadership roles speak to the effectiveness of my instruction. My English Language Interventionist class in CCSD 62 contributed to 5/9 newcomers transitioning into general education classes, with one meeting WIDA exit criteria. The following year, 9/9 ELs in my targeted writing intervention showed growth on ACCESS, with 4/9 meeting WIDA exit criteria, placing me as the teacher with the most exits in the district. Later, in CPS, I was quickly recognized for strong classroom practices and invited to join the school’s instructional leadership team, where I collaborated with administration and colleagues to analyze school-wide data, discuss best practices, observe classrooms, and provide teachers with feedback. If you are interested in improving your English for purposes of everyday communication, excelling in a subject matter, and opening any doors to opportunities in your life, I am here to help!

I am also a Spanish and Latin dancer! This past year, I began instructing Spanish dance classes in CPS high schools through Ensemble Español. I also taught social dances to friends and provided private Spanish dance instruction to kids and colleagues. If you would like to learn how to dance salsa, merengue, bachata, receive a wedding choreography and lessons to enjoy your dance on your special day, play castanets, dance Sevillanas or Rumbas, or learn the foundations of classical Spanish dance, send me a message to let me know what exactly you are looking for!

Within public schools internationally, in the suburbs of Chicago, and in Chicago Public Schools, I have taken on the roles of: -English and Language Arts Classroom and Homeroom Teacher -Writing Interventionist using Lucy Calkins Writers' Workshop Model -Writing Interventionist using Step Up to Writing -English Language Learner Resource Teacher _English and Language Arts Co-Teacher
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

Over the past 12 years, I have worked specifically with English language learners internationally, in the suburbs of Chicago, and also Chicago Public Schools. Within these classrooms, my roles have ranged from being the classroom English and Language Arts teacher with EL students in her class, a resource teacher and interventionist who pulls out small groups, and lastly, I also have the valuable experience of working in a district with the newcomer instructional model, where students who are new to the country with little to no English learn core subjects with a focus on developing their English alongside that for 2-3 years before entering the general education classrooms. I held leadership positions in the area of English Learners in my position in Chicago Public Schools, helping administrations and colleagues develop and share best practices for students who are just beginning to develop a foundation in English, those who have some conversational skills but struggle academically, and also those who are close to exiting or have already exiting the EL program by passing their ACCESS exams.
Phonics

Phonics

I am majoring in English and Spanish. I have a deep understanding of the different phonemes that accompany the two languages. My knowledge of phonics is especially strong given that I took required phonetics classes in order to complete both my English and Spanish major. And, my ability to teach English phonics is higher than most because I've spent so much time teaching English pronunciation to foreigners from ages 4 to adults.
Salsa Dancing

Salsa Dancing

I compete in Latin Ballroom Dance with my teacher, Aleksander Nashev. I have taught salsa, merengue, and bachata in middle school after school programs and also to friends! I am currently a Spanish and Flamenco dancer with Chicago's Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater. I continue to work with my principal teacher of many years, Paloma Gomez (PGISDA), former soloist of the Ballet Nacional of Spain. I have taught Spanish dance through Ensemble Español to CPS high schoolers. The class is a cultural experience through which students earn college credit! I would be so happy to share tools to help students approach musicality, steps, and communication with their partner with anyone who is motivated to learn!

Great empathy and great teacher!

Jocelyn was quick and accurate in assessing the level of my English comprehension and did an outstanding job. No doubt that she will be my tutor in the future.

Dance Lesson for a Second Grader

Jocelyn was very knowledgeable and very professional when working with me granddaughter. My granddaughter has not had any dance training yet, but Jocelyn taught her some basic moves and dance vocabulary. Savanah was super excited about the lesson and learning these new moves. She had a lot of fun and can’t wait until her next lesson.
