Bio

Hello potential cello student!

My name is Dessislava, which always proves to be way too long, so I am happy to go by Dessi.

I have taught private cello lessons from beginners to music majors in college. I have also performed in numerous orchestras. Some of them include the Arkansas Symphony (AR), Lansing Symphony and Flint Symphony (MI), and Civic Orchestra of Chicago (where I met and chatted for a while with Yo-Yo Ma!). My chamber music recitals have taken me to Canada and Puerto Rico.

I enjoy having students who are interested in learning not only how to play the cello but also how to think, identify problems, and learn how to come up with practicing techniques. I also enjoy when my students have questions no matter what they are.

I was a teaching assistant at Michigan State University and was a cello professor at Albion College (MI). I currently teach at Urban Prairie Waldorf School and British International School in Chicago as well as District 204 in Naperville, IL.

Hope to hear from you!

Music

Cello,

Cello

I started playing cello at age 6 at the Plovdiv Music School in Bulgaria. I have a BM and MM in Cello Performance, and subsequently received my DMA where I was the TA to a Tchaikovsky Competition winner. I have been teaching cello to students of all ages and backgrounds for the last 23 years, with several students pursuing music degrees at major universities. My playing experience spans almost 40 years, and I have extensive experience with studio recordings ranging from pop to classical, have played in Broadway shows, and can be heard on NPR with mirabai and the Grammy Award winning MSU Children's Choir.
Music Theory

Music Theory

I started learning solfège/music theory as early as first grade, and I took theory classes through High School and College. Music theory is my favorite subject to teach outside of teaching cello, which is why all of my cello students also have to learn theory. It is helpful whether it is used to analyze the structure of a whole piece or a single chord. It is also instrumental in developing one's "ear" (good sense of pitch). Music theory is fun!

Encouraging and professional

My daughter has taken a few lessons with Dr. Dessi now and it appears to be a perfect fit. She is so patient, and she constantly amazes me with her ability to hone in on such specifics to improve and teach my daughter - especially via a computer monitor. She is obviously a supreme professional and takes a lot of pride in raising her students to new levels of performance. She also encourages her students to find their own playing style and approach to the instrument and then is able to instruct them in their own style. She's simply amazing. We are so happy we found her and my daughter looks forward to her lessons every week.

Excellent tutor!

My daughter tried out four teachers and we came to select Dessi. Dessi is able to provide strict instructions on techniques, yet with a warm and firm attitude. We avoid those teachers who try to boost students' confidence by praises but neglecting techniques; we also cannot accept teachers who are extremly strict that students lose interest. Dessi is a good teacher with both traites. We feel she posseses a capable string teacher's good qualities- lay foundaitonal technique and assess/adjust students progress so as to boost their confidence, step by step. My daughter has benefited from Dessi's online teaching during COVID time. My daughter just came to he today after class, telling me "I had a great session wiht Dessie today!", meaning she felt she learned/improved. Highly recommend without doubt!

Great tutor

In our first lesson, Dessi's instruction -- she showed me that I was holding the bow wrong and how to properly play co legno -- was very helpful. We also worked with scales. After the lesson, Dessi e-mailed me with further instructions on what to practice. I look forward to learning from Dessi again

Thoughtful with feedback

D gives clear instructions with explanations for why she is wants her student to work on certain techniques. She is kind with her critics and I can see that she truly wants to teach and have her student work on technics.

first lesson

Dessi is very patient and thorough in foundations which is really really important!!!! She is attentive and explains things well and in such a way that student is able to correct deficiencies. I love feedback notes and reminders on what to practice for next lesson. I would highly recommend her!!!!

Excellent Tutor, Exactly What I Was Looking For!

I had never picked up a cello before my first lesson with Dessi, but it wasn't a problem at all. She showed me the correct positioning and how to play in the first meeting and I was able to play on my own almost right away. I had experience with reading music and learning an instrument so she was able to tailor the lessons to my strengths and weaknesses. She's very knowledgeable of the instrument and the lessons are casual and low stress. She does a very good job of making you feel comfortable if you are just learning (and, if like me, still make a lot of mistakes) but also has an excellent understanding of the instrument so is still able to teach the finer points for a more experienced cellist. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dessi to anyone just learning the cello or already experienced and wanting to improve!
