About Simon

Bio

My name is Simon, and I want to help you understand Math, Physics, and Computer Programming. I like to tutor in my free-time in part because I see it as a public service -- the ideas in these subjects aren't necessarily easy, and students deserve to understand them. I usually work with students who want some extra face-time with an expert who knows what's going on in their classes. I like to help students build good maps of the subjects they're learning, ideally so that they can easily find...

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Algebra is one of the foundational branches of math. In Algebra, students learn about the properties of number systems, develop problem-solving and communication skills, and gain proficiency using variables to analyze situations. Keywords: expressions, equations, linear equations, systems of equations, inequalities, polynomials, factoring, rational expressions, irrational numbers, the quadratic formula.
Calculus

Calculus

Calculus studies the relationship between the value of a quantity and how the quantity changes. An understanding of calculus enables the use of an entirely new language for describing phenomena, and it has applications to every piece of mathematics taught in high school. Keywords: limits, derivatives, antiderivatives, integration, fundamental theorem of calculus, sequences and series, and applications.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I took a differential equations class in college, and I review the subject periodically to keep it fresh. In graduate school, I work with differential equations every day, so I have a firm ground in both their theory and application.
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

I majored in Mathematics, and my course work included Discrete Math, Number Theory, and Abstract Algebra. I am well versed in many relevant topics, such as proof by induction, game theory, combinatorics, and probability.
Geometry

Geometry

Geometry is the study of space. To study it, we delineate the space with lines, polygons, and angles. By describing the properties of the shapes we create, we come to understand the space they occupy. Geometry is a marvelously fascinating subject, and it is of pivotal importance in the high school math curriculum. Let me help your student to see its beauty and power and give them the tools to succeed in the rest of their math curriculum.
Java

Java

I can help students develop proficiency not only with the practical logistics of programming, but also with the use of Visibility Modifiers, Abstract Classes, Interfaces, Inheritance, Overriding, and Overloading for optimal project design.
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I took a Linear Algebra course my first year of college, and I use it almost every day in my work and research. I have years of practice helping students understand Gauss-Jordan elimination, diagonalization of matrices, and the properties of inner product spaces.
Physics

Physics

Physics is the study of the universe in the language of Mathematics. As you've no doubt noticed, the universe can be a confusing place to live, and the Mathematics often further obfuscates the matter. Let me help. I have experience tutoring and teaching introductory Algebra- and Calculus-based Physics, including Electricity and Magnetism and the content of the AP Physics exams. I am also well-versed in more advanced topics, including Classical Dynamics, Electrodynamics, Special and General Relativity, Quantum Mechanics, and Particle Physics.
Python

Python

I used SciPy and NumPy one summer to do data-processing for a project I was working on. My program took images from a camera and used cross-correlation to locate an object in the frame. I also implemented a program to monitor and respond to movement of the object.

Wonderful!

I've worked with a lot of tutors before but Simon is by far one of the best! He's easy to work with and he's good at recognizing your strengths and weaknesses and helping you recognize problems without discouraging you! He really has a deep understanding of physics but he's also a really good teacher! He knows how to guide you so that you really learn how to solve problems. I really can't say enough great things about Simon, I've nailed my last physics tests because of his help and you won't find a better tutor for his rates! If you need a college physics tutor, he's the way to go!

Excellent tutor!

Simon is an excellent tutor! My daughter began her senior year in high school completely frustrated by her inability to understand AP calculus. She started working with Simon who was very knowledgeable about the material and was able to explain it in a way that my daughter could comprehend it. As a result of being tutored by Simon, my daughter raised her final grade to an A-. He was always professional, responded quickly to my emails and was a delight to work with.

Great Tutor!

Simon is a great tutor and is always able to teach in a manner which is clear to my 11th grader. We originally asked Simon to help with AP Physics. In a short time my 11th grader has gone from a C+ to an A in physics. Simon has also assisted with college exam test prep. Simon is a patient, polite, highly engaged, and absolutely amazing teacher. Simon is now reviewing calculus with with my soon to be 12th grader for the next level of that class and with Simon what was previously hard, now makes sense.

Highly Recommended

Simon is extremely smart. I can't believe he even understands quantum theory. To explain how amazing Simon is, here is an example: It was 11:30 p.m and I had an exam the next day. I was totally fried and worried about the exam so I text him, "Can you help me with my Modern Physics review?" He and I met at 9 a.m. the following morning and I did extremely well on the exam. Within 2 sessions, I learned about a week's worth of Quantum Physics. True Story! He is absolutely great. I HIGHLY recommend him as a tutor.

Patient, kind, and easygoing

My daughter said Simon is "AWESOME." He has a gift for teaching and we appreciated his flexibility in meeting with us on short notice. We look for forward to the next session.
