About Bryan

Committed to cultivating a love of learning and the ability to think critically, I am an educator by vocation. My academic background is in chemistry, which also brings strength in mathematics. I hold a B.S. in Chemistry from Loyola University Chicago. I have taught all levels of chemistry, including at the Advanced Placement level. I am currently teaching at a private school in Chicago, but most recently was at a New England boarding school, for students with both learning differences and above average intelligence. I have experience working with an unique, but high potential group. I have over 10 years tutoring chemistry at the high school level.

Tutoring experience also includes serving as a literacy tutor to non-native speakers.

Chemistry is often one of the first courses that students meet that begins to challenge their mode of thinking. For those future scientists or avid science haters, I attempt to emphasize the applicability of the evaluative skills and analytical thinking that are demanded in chemistry and mathematics in future academic work.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I taught at an all boys boarding school in New England for 5 years that specialized in boys that have above average intelligence, but have not been successful in traditional environments. The majority of the students that I taught had an ADD/ADHD diagnosis in addition to struggles with anxiety, executive function, and other learning differences. During those years I both served as an classroom teacher and administrator therefore the profile of the student is very familiar to me -- especially with the 24/7 nature of a boarding school.
