Do you or your child need help with math and science class? If so, I can help. My name is Adrian and I earned a B.A. in chemistry from Dartmouth College and a Masters in physical organic chemistry from The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI). Currently I work as a clinical laboratory scientist. My years of instruction and practical experience in chemistry labs have equipped me well to explain essential chemistry concepts to a young audience. In 2005 I was awarded the Best Teaching Assistant award for organic chemistry class. At TSRI I also served as a Teaching Assistant. In addition to my background in chemistry, I am very well-versed in basic math, geometry, algebra, SAT and ACT math, and calculus.

Over the course of my career I have worked in academic, industrial, and government laboratories, and by tutoring I hope to share the knowledge gained from that time with motivated students at all different levels. Whether you are an aspiring scientist, or simply struggling to pass a prerequisite chemistry class, my tutoring techniques will help you.

I am also open to tutoring my second language, French, in which I have achieved a high level of fluency through coursework in both high school and college. In 1998 I was awarded a medal for my fluency by the Alliance Francaise.

Approved Subjects

ACT Math

ACT Math

Will you soon be taking the ACT test and need a bit of a math refresher? If so I would be happy to help you. I am fully familiar with the ACT test format and have a number of questions that are representative of those on the actual exam. My tutoring will be excellent preparation for the testing situation and will include drills for speed and accuracy. Let's work together to boost your ACT score! Contact me for more information and to arrange a tutoring session.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 represents a stepping stone towards more advanced topics in both math and science. It is an important bridge between abstract mathematics and applied problems in the world of chemistry, physics, and finance. I have many years of practical experience using algebra in my work as an analytical chemist in industry, and math has always been a passion of mine. If you need some guidance in the subject of algebra I am the tutor for you. Please feel free to contact me for more information - and good luck with your studies.
Calculus

Calculus

As a chemistry major, I was required to take several terms of calculus and differential equations in college. As a high school student I was awarded the Wilhelm Leibniz award for excellence in AP calculus and had enrolled in multivariable calculus and differential equations prior to graduation. As a tutor my focus will always be on the student. Calculus is an exciting subject because it represents a leap into advanced math and therefore it is perfectly normal for someone to seek out extra tutoring in this subject. Please feel free to contact me for more information about calculus tutoring.
Chemistry

Chemistry

Chemistry is sometimes referred to as the fundamental or central science because it forms the foundation of biology and our experience of the everyday world. My approach to teaching chemistry is to focus on those aspects of the subject that are intuitive to our common experiences so as to make the subject understandable and fun. My emphasis will always be on fundamental concepts and using them to approach problem solving. My background has prepared me well to tutor both general and organic chemistry. I look forward to working with you!
French

French

I studied French as my second language and won the French Award in High School for excellent performance in the subject. I also won a Bronze Medal from Le Grand Concours, a New York state French competition. In college I took literature courses in French including 20th century and francophone literature. I also lived with a family in France during high school as my study abroad experience.
Geometry

Geometry

Do you need help in geometry class? If so I can be your one-on-one tutor for one or several lessons. I am a chemist working in the biotech industry and therefore am very knowledgeable about formulas used in geometry and techniques for solving analytical geometry problems. My background in geometry includes years of math training at Stuyvesant High School, a math and science high school in New York City, as well as undergraduate schooling at Dartmouth College. I am eager not just to get you through your next exam, but also to promote a genuine interest in this subject. Please contact me for more information about geometry tutoring.
Organic Chemistry

Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry is the study of chemical reactions that pertain to carbon compounds and forms the basis of many of the materials in everyday life including petrochemicals, food, medicines, plastics, as well as paints and dyes. A clear understanding of organic reactions depends upon an appreciation of the mechanism of electron flow. Those topics will be emphasized in my tutoring. My background and qualifications to tutor organic chemistry include the Shafer and Bowen Award for Excellence in Laboratory Instruction, which I earned from Dartmouth College in 2005 along with my B.A. in chemistry. I have served as a graduate student teaching assistant for Physical Organic Chemistry at The Scripps Research Institute, where my research has concerned the production of libraries of organic compounds for testing in biophysical assays. I am particularly well-versed in amide-bond forming reactions, SN2-type displacements, nucleophilic aromatic substitutions, and the purification of those and related compounds.
Precalculus

Precalculus

Precalculus is a broad category that includes topics such as infinite sequences and series, trigonometric identities, polynomial and synthetic division, as well as analytic geometry (parabolas, hyperbolas, ellipses, etc.). I have found that many students need just a little bit of help coming up to speed in this course because the material is somewhat heavier than in their earlier math classes. It would be my pleasure to help you succeed in precalculus for a few or several sessions.
SAT Math

SAT Math

The SAT math section has evolved over the years and now includes new components such as student-produced responses and questions relating to data analysis and probability. Let's work together to boost your score on the SAT math section by preparing for these new features of the exam. We will train the same way you would for a sport to get you ready to perform on the SAT.

Great Tutor!

Adrian helped my son prepare for the ACT in math and science. Adrian always arrived very well prepared. He explained the material very clearly. He was very productive, covering a lot of material during the sessions. He is friendly, engaging, and good at motivating. My son always looked forward to the sessions. Adrian would follow up between sessions via email. He wrote thorough reports after each lesson. We highly recommend him!

Patient and kind

Adrian is infinitely patient and kind to both my teenage son and middle school daughter. He is tutoring my son in Chemistry and Algebra. He has the student explain how he arrived at his answer and helps him to understand a different way. His enthusiasm for answering questions is wonderful, and we works with the student rather than just tell him how to do it. His review notes from the follow up are detailed and thorough, and easily understandable.

Highly Recommended!

My daughter's grade has gone from a F to a C and is quickly climbing higher with Adrian's help. More importantly, she is understanding the concepts. What I really enjoy about Adrian are his follow up emails, which are always insightful and action-oriented. They give us direction on where to best focus. Adrian is always accessible by phone as well and especially helpful right before a big test.

Excellent Chemistry Tutor

Adrian was very prompt in responding to my emails. He arrived on time and was very polite and professional. My son, who is a sophomore at a college-prep high school, was reluctant to have a tutor. However, he was all smiles afterward and said Adrian explained the chemistry material in easy to understand steps. He felt much more comfortable and confident after his tutoring session. Adrian is very patient and effective. I highly recommend him and plan to schedule with him again.
