Tulane University (Finance)
Tulane University - Accounting (Master's)
CFA Charterholder (Other)
WHAT I DO:
I tutor MBA/undergrads, corporate executives, and CFA candidates. I cover finance, accounting, the CFA exam material, statistics, excel modeling, and other related areas. I have also covered FAR material on the CPA. On a referral basis, I have worked with individuals as far away as Europe (Turkey, Germany, etc.) and Asia (India, Australia, etc.).
WHY YOU SHOULD CONTACT ME:
I'm probably the best accounting/finance tutor in Chicago. I am not the cheapest option, but I am typically one of the highest quality options that will help you effectively understand the material or problem you are trying to solve. I have been frequently referred to by former students as better than the average professor at Northwestern, DePaul, etc., and it is not uncommon for people to tell me that I am the best teacher they have ever had.
I have a very strong mix of real world and academic experience experience. I focus on taking people beyond basic formulas or academic example exercises to understanding contextually why certain analysis matter and how they relate to real world scenarios in the global economy / financial markets framework.
MY EDUCATION BACKGROUND:
I've an MS in accounting and a BS in finance from Tulane University. I am a CFA Charterholder. I passed every exam on the first attempt. I have extensive experience in modeling and statistical analysis in R and Excel.
MY WORK EXPERIENCE BACKGROUND:
I have eight years working experience at multiple investment partnerships (hedge fund and venture capital). I was a generalist/special situations analyst and venture capitalist primarily focused on the technology sector.
In private/venture capital, I have boardroom experience and worked on situations ranging from distressed restructurings to start-ups with nothing more than IP and a powerpoint slidedeck. Firms I’ve invested in and worked with have been sold to Oracle, Intel, as well as taken public (IPO). I've funded companies with well known C-level executives.
In public company/hedge fund work, I've worked on various accounting frauds/restatements, special situations (spin-offs, etc.) and other equity generalist situations. I am more of an equity person than a debt person. However, I have done a bit of distressed debt work.
MY TUTORING EXPERIENCE:
I've tutored people off and on as a personal hobby. It’s expanded more in recent years, largely through referrals. I have tutored people from many organizations including:
Wharton, Duke, Creighton, Notre Dame, Northwestern, DePaul, New York University, Columbia, Stanford, Univ of Wisconsin, and Univ of Chicago (Booth). I have worked with executives from major companies such as Chicago Mercantile Exchange, UBS, JPMorgan Chase, Medtronic, Takeda, Northern Trust, a couple hedge funds, and other well known institutions.
- Consulting work is separate from tutoring/teaching.
- If you contact me – PLEASE BE AS DETAILED AS POSSIBLE: Tell me what you are trying to accomplish and any other pertinent data (materials, topics, etc.). WHAT I DO:

If corporate finance or accounting is troubling you then Cliff is your man. Correlating case study examples with theory, I found his explanations very easy to follow. Now I don't consider myself a person that is exceptionally capable of swiftly grasping concepts, but if you ever feel like he's going too fast then just tell him to slow down (and trust me, he WILL slow down and make sure you understand EVERYTHING). His style of teaching is very flexible and you will learn as long as you stay attentive. So if you're struggling like I was then I suggest giving him a go. In the end, you may not have to drop that $2,000 class and can attempt to maintain that strong GPA that you've always wanted.
Cliff has a unbelievably deep knowledge of the financial landscape and can simplify complex subjects. He sites real word examples that bring the subject to life. Very easy to understand. Very helpful.
Cliff helped me to better understand foreign currency transactions, and differences in monetary and non monetary assets. He was able to break down concepts I was little fuzzy on and even had his own notes to help simplify them. It was very useful.
I learned financial modeling. Cliff knows accounting and modeling very well and was very patient in explaining this to me.

Cliff went over some problems with me and walked me through how to create a tree versus a cross-tab. Very helpful. I needed that extra one on one time with a tutor to review this concept. Thank you Cliff.
Cliff was prompt and provided excellent service. He is a very sharp young man and has an bright future as an accountant. He uses personal techniques to jump start even for the slowest of learners, and does not mind repeating a theory until there is a hint of understanding. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a masters degree in accounting and have seen at least 8 different accounting textbooks at all different levels. I explain accounting in a unique, easy-to-remember way that makes all transactions understandable (debits/credits). I've experience working with people from basic financial accounting 101 through complicated IFRS/GAAP merger and acquisition analysis. I can cover any accounting material except tax. I do not tutor for the CPA exam, only for college-level coursework and the CFA exam.
I have extensive experience analyzing companies and business plans. I've funded companies that have been acquired by well known publicly traded companies like Intel. I am an expert in financial analysis and forecasting. I have trained over 200 MBA students.
I've experience in all areas of finance, including project finance (scenario analysis), M&A transaction work, basic college/MBA finance coursework, all major standardized tests (CFP, CFA, CAIA), executing private equity transactions, modeling LBOs/debt/equity recapitalizations, long/short hedge fund, and some cap structure arbitrage.
