Educational Background
I graduated summa cum laude and as valedictorian from Denison University with a degree in Communication and Creative Writing. My distinguished senior thesis was a completed fantasy novel, Fable, which required sustained, independent work on narrative structure, voice, and revision — the same skills I help students build in their own writing. I also served as a departmental fellow for two years, and founded a creative writing club on campus to build community among student writers outside the classroom.

Previous Tutoring/Teaching Experience
Most recently, I served as Head Teaching Assistant for the Reynolds Young Writers Workshop at Denison, an eight-day residential creative writing program for rising high school juniors and seniors. In that role, I led programming for 47 students, running structured evening writing activities and workshops, and was available informally throughout the program to critique student work one-on-one. The program's model — small workshop groups (12 students or fewer) built around drafting, sharing, and revising work in a supportive setting — shaped how I approach teaching writing: I favor a workshop-style method that treats students as working writers, using guided critique and targeted questions (rather than top-down correction) to help them find their own solutions to problems in their writing.

Special Interest
I had the chance to study abroad in Bath, England, where I took creative writing classes that pushed my craft in new directions and deepened my love of storytelling. I'm a lifelong fantasy and mystery reader, with a special soft spot for fairytales (fitting, since I wrote my own novel-length one for my senior thesis!). I can't wait to meet new students, hear about what they love to read and write, and help them build the confidence to tell their own stories.

Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I graduated valedictorian and summa cum laude from Denison University with a degree in Communication and Creative Writing, and completed a full-length fantasy novel, Fable, as my distinguished senior thesis. Most recently, I served as Head Teaching Assistant for the Reynolds Young Writers Workshop, leading programming for 47 high school students through daily creative writing workshops, structured evening writing activities, and one-on-one critique. I also spent two years as a departmental fellow and founded a creative writing club on campus to build community among student writers. My approach is workshop-style: I ask guided questions to help students discover their own voice, rather than imposing mine.
English

English

I graduated valedictorian and summa cum laude from Denison University with a 4.0 GPA in Communication and English (Creative Writing), earning honors including the Marjorie McCutchen Prize for Excellence in English, the Clyde S. Schumacher Award, the Suzanne Condray Award, and induction into both the English and Phi Honors Societies. I served as an English Department Fellow for three years, working alongside faculty to program department events and founding a peer-review space to help students strengthen their writing. As Head TA for the Reynolds Young Writers Workshop, I also led 47 high school students through daily writing and language instruction. I bring strong grounding in grammar, composition, and literary analysis, along with a workshop-style teaching approach that builds students' confidence as readers and writers.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I graduated valedictorian and summa cum laude from Denison University with a degree in Communication and English (Creative Writing), earning numerous departmental honors including the Marjorie McCutchen Prize for Excellence in English, the John P. Levis Award, and induction into both the Communication and English Honors Societies. As a two-year English Department Fellow, I founded a bi-monthly peer-review space where students exchanged drafts and refined their work into polished portfolios, giving me extensive experience helping writers identify what's working, what isn't, and how to reorganize an essay for maximum clarity and impact. As Head TA for the Reynolds Young Writers Workshop, I also worked one-on-one with 47 high school students on drafting and revision. I'm especially skilled at helping students strengthen structure and argument in an essay without losing their personal voice.

I studied creative writing further while abroad in Bath, England, and I'm an avid fantasy and mystery reader with a particular love of fairytales. I focus on helping students build confidence in their storytelling instincts while sharpening craft fundamentals like structure and pacing.

Knowledgable and Patient Tutor

We have worked with Fiona outside of Wyzant and have consistently been impressed with her knowledge, patience, and ability to connect. We recently had a one-time session to help our son with an essay, and the experience was excellent. Fiona quickly understood what my son needed and provided thoughtful, constructive feedback that helped him strengthen his ideas, organization, and writing while still keeping the work authentically his own. My son left the session feeling confident in his writing and much clearer about how to improve his essay. We have been extremely pleased with the support and guidance Fiona provides.
