Hi, I'm Johann! I grew up in New York and studied mathematics at the University of Chicago, where I earned my bachelor's degree with a specialization in economics. I've since completed a master's degree in statistics at the London School of Economics, and this fall I'm applying to PhD programs in statistics. In the year before I start, I'm hoping to spend as much time as I can helping students grow more confident in math. As someone who used to struggle with math until I was lucky enough to have a string of excellent math teachers in high school, I know how important good math instruction can be, and my hope is to be able to help students along this same journey.
I have experience tutoring and teaching both high school and college students in math and related subjects. I spent a year in university holding informal math tutoring sessions with groups of 1-5 younger college students at a time and have spent time helping my brother through math SAT prep and high school math and my sister with college level proof-based math. Additionally, I spent a summer working as a teaching assistant for a high school economics program at UChicago, where I lectured on topics in economics and statistics. I offer tutoring for late middle school through early college level math and statistics.
I like to begin tutoring by getting to know the student and learning about their other interests and what areas of math they feel more or less confident in. I'll also ask to see a student's course syllabus, a sense of how things have been going, and a sample of recent work, so I can tailor our time to exactly what they're covering in class. In sessions, I like to review the main concepts discussed in class before working through practice problems or homework with the student.
