Hey everyone, I'm Hazel! I graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Biology and have a strong background in biology, chemistry, and environmental science. I currently work in a college science department, where I manage and prepare general biology, biochemistry, and microbiology labs and work closely with both students and faculty. I also have hands-on research experience in ecology and biology, which has given me a strong understanding of how the concepts students learn in class are actually applied in the lab and in research.

While I am new to tutoring specifically, I have several years of experience working with and mentoring college students in a laboratory setting. I train student workers on lab techniques and procedures, answer questions, and help them understand the science behind what they are doing rather than simply telling them what steps to follow. I have found that I really enjoy breaking down complicated concepts and figuring out a different way to explain something when it isn't clicking the first time.

I am available to work with high school and college students in biology and chemistry, including general biology, general chemistry, genetics, evolution, ecology, and environmental science. My approach is pretty straightforward: we can figure out where you are getting stuck, work through it together, and focus on actually understanding the material rather than just memorizing enough to get through an exam. My goal is for students to leave a session feeling more confident and able to work through similar problems on their own.

Approved Subjects

Biology

Biology

I earned my degree in Biology from Northwestern University and currently work in a college science department supporting biology courses and laboratories. I have several years of experience working with and mentoring college students, including explaining biological concepts and helping students understand the science behind laboratory procedures. My background also includes hands-on biological and ecological research, with experience in genetics, evolution, cell biology, and environmental biology. I am comfortable working with both high school and introductory college-level biology.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have a strong background in general chemistry through my Human Biology degree from Northwestern University and my current work in a college science department. I prepare and manage chemistry labs for undergraduate courses and regularly work with chemistry faculty and students in the laboratory. My experience includes solution preparation, chemical calculations, laboratory techniques, and working safely with a wide range of chemicals and equipment. I am comfortable helping high school and introductory college students work through general chemistry concepts and problems step by step.
Earth Science

Earth Science

I have a degree in Human Biology from Northwestern University and professional and research experience in environmental science and ecology. My research has focused on urban ecosystem restoration, including soil health, nutrient cycling, plant-microbe interactions, and the effects of restoration on ecological communities. I also work in a college science department where I support environmental science and biology courses and laboratories and regularly work with students and faculty. I am comfortable helping high school and introductory college students understand ecology, ecosystems, biodiversity, pollution, climate change, and other environmental science topics.
Ecology
