I hold a Master’s Degree in Teaching and Performing Popular Music and Jazz with an emphasis in Piano and Keyboards from the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart, Germany.

I am a professional musician and educator with 20+ years of teaching experience. I have taught private lessons in contemporary piano and keyboards, including pop, jazz, and Latin styles, and have taught and developed courses in piano, music theory, arranging, orchestration, keyboard skills, and music production in both in-person and online learning environments.

As an Adjunct Professor of Music at Columbia College Chicago, I have worked with students of diverse backgrounds and skill levels, helping them develop practical musicianship, creativity, and confidence in a variety of contemporary musical settings. In addition to my college teaching experience, I taught children ages 6–10 at the German International School Chicago for four years.

My teaching approach emphasizes listening, understanding, creativity, and practical musical application. Whether your goal is to improve your piano playing, strengthen your understanding of harmony, melody, and rhythm, develop improvisation skills, explore arranging and composition, or learn music production techniques, I strive to help you build the skills and confidence needed to apply these concepts in real musical situations.

Approved Subjects

Ear Training

Ear Training

I have more than 20 years of experience teaching ear training as part of music theory, keyboard skills, improvisation, and musicianship courses at Columbia College Chicago. My approach emphasizes developing the ability to recognize and understand melody, harmony, rhythm, chord progressions, and musical structures by ear. Students learn through a combination of listening, singing, playing, analysis, and practical musical application. These skills help musicians improve their performance, improvisation, creativity, and overall musical fluency.
Music Production

Music Production

I teach Contemporary Arranging and Orchestration, Contemporary Arranging in Music Production, and Advanced Digital Music Production at Columbia College Chicago. In addition to my academic work, I have extensive experience producing, arranging, orchestrating, and recording music using Logic Pro and professional music notation software. My production credits include the album Windy, featuring acclaimed Chicago jazz trumpeter Orbert Davis, as well as numerous collaborations with vocalists and instrumentalists. I help students develop practical skills in recording, MIDI programming, music notation, arranging, orchestration, editing, and mixing while applying these concepts to their own musical projects.
Piano

Piano

I hold a Master’s Degree in Teaching and Performing Popular Music and Jazz with an emphasis in Piano and Keyboards and have 20+ years of teaching experience. As an active pianist and keyboardist in the Chicago area, I regularly perform and apply the same skills I teach in real musical settings. I have taught private piano lessons as well as college-level courses in piano and keyboard skills at Columbia College Chicago. My instruction focuses on contemporary styles including pop, jazz, and Latin music, helping students develop strong musicianship, creativity, improvisation skills, and practical piano-playing abilities.

Compassionate and Highly Skilled Teacher

I like Thomas' teaching style because he found where I need work within the first few minutes. Instead of giving me music, he gave me finger isolation exercises. Those exercises helped improve my finger control and independance within the first few lessons. He also corrected my wrist position so strain doesnt occur. He even suggested I raise my chair to improve my playing posture. In just a few lessons I learned a lot about playing with both hands I was never aware about.
