I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education with a focus on Spanish Language and Literature from Northeastern University, as well as a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from American College of Education. Over 27 years, I have been teaching Spanish at various levels, from level 1 to AP Spanish, at a selective enrollment school in Illinois, catering to both native and non-native students in grades 9-12.
Being both a native Spanish speaker and a second-language learner myself, I understand the challenges of achieving accurate pronunciation, especially considering the wide range of dialects within the Spanish language. In my teaching approach, I prioritize recognizing this diversity and ensuring that all cultures are respected when covering grammatical and cultural topics. I have a particular interest in teaching grammar and have developed over 3,000 lessons to help students grasp the subtleties of grammar, particularly the subjunctive tense. I have a track record of guiding students to excel in the AP Language Exam and the Biliteracy Exam.
As a tutor, I have worked with numerous families with elementary and high school students, aiding them in passing the AP Spanish Language test. I have been commended for achieving the highest AATSP National Exam scores. The success of my students is a testament to my commitment and enthusiasm for teaching. Through my involvement with the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), my students consistently rank among the top schools in Chicagoland and its suburbs, and nationally they are recognized as one of the premier institutions. Many students obtain their biliteracy certification each year after completing the required courses to take such a test. One notable experience involved tutoring a five-year-old student, which initially made me apprehensive due to my lack of experience with students of that age. By incorporating a variety of resources such as songs, visuals, and manipulatives, the outcome was a great success!
