I'm Jay! I graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor's of Science in Music Technology from Columbia College Chicago, with a minor in Gender and Sexuality Studies. In college, I frequently used the on campus tutoring services and tutoring was integral to my education. Oftentimes, I went to tutoring just to pick another person's brain, to reinforce what I had learned, to help me plan my study schedule and eventually, I became a Peer Tutor, too. In my experiences as a TA and a tutor, I've had the chance to work with students from varied backgrounds. I have tutored groups and done one on one sessions with college aged and adult students. As of May 2026, I have ~500 hours of tutoring under my belt. I've tutored students for English, Python, audio applications like Pro Tools, Logic Pro and Ableton, math (up to calculus II) and physics.
To work as a Peer Tutor at Columbia College Chicago, I did a 15 week rigorous training in peer educator practice and I now approach my own practice with my professional training along with my individual perspective. In my sessions, I implement a variety of techniques not just to teach a subject, but to encourage students to use every resource take charge of their learning. Before our first session, I will request some information on what the student is looking to work on so I can ensure I am prepared for our session. During sessions, we will establish an agenda for what we hope to get done in our session time in the first 5 to 7 minutes. We will spend the bulk of our session working through the agenda, which will include a balance of teaching and independent practice work for the student. Before wrapping up, we will summarize what we worked on during the session, discuss and plan what the student needs to do before our next session and I will also share supplemental resources. I will also periodically check in with the student to ensure proper understanding before we move to another topic.
Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions!
