Hi! My name is Vuk and I’m an advanced tutor focusing on helping students with advanced chemistry, math, and physics coursework. I have a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University and a B.A. in both Physics and Chemistry from the University of Chicago. I chose to tutor because I care deeply about helping students cultivate their math and science skills. I am passionate about 1-on-1 mentorship as I believe the best teaching comes about when the student has a personal relationship with the instructor.

I specialize in helping high school and college students with advanced science and math coursework, particularly at the AP or IB level. However, I can comfortably mentor students in most non-elective college-level physics and chemistry classes, foundational engineering classes, and college math at the intro calculus and non-proof-based linear algebra level. My dual major allows me to comfortably mentor students across both fields if needed.

My primary goal in teaching students is to build confidence and self-directed learning skills for a wide range of future career goals. I work by pinpointing any difficulties the student has in following the logic of the coursework and helping them truly understand the material. I have years of experience as a research scientist that I bring to help students learn how to think like one. Science and math can often be intimidating subjects, but my goal is to help students grow into confident learners capable of solving the problems that are put in front of them.

I tier my prices based on the level of the coursework, asking for $90/hr for general high school coursework, $120/hr for AP/IB coursework, and $150/hr for college-level coursework, with a 20% discount for online-only tutoring. Calculus is often a level of math where abstract and complex notation starts to overwhelm students, but it is fundamental to how we understand the world around us. In my undergraduate studies, I routinely applied calculus to physics and chemistry problem sets. As a graduate student and later as a research scientist, I also had extensive experience in using calculus to derive results and calculate necessary parameters for complex scientific questions. As a result, I am well-versed in helping students break down these abstract concepts and understand how they may be applied to a real-world setting.

Chemistry

Chemistry is often seen as a barrier to understanding sciences, as it is one of the first times that quantitative methodology is introduced into science classes. At the University of Chicago, I successfully completed the coursework required for a chemistry major. I then moved on to do research work in materials science, giving me a practical knowledge of how chemical concepts are used in a research setting. As a result, I can help students move past the tedious balancing that many associate with chemistry and help them intuitively understand the interactions between matter that define the world around us.

Geometry is often a tough adjustment for students as it requires a transition from simple calculations to visual logic. Because I've spent years using geometric relationships in my calculus, physics, and chemistry homework, and later in a research science setting, I have extensive experience in translating that visual logic to practical questions that matter to students. As a result, I am extremely qualified to help students analyze, visualize, and master these concepts.

Physics is one of the most important courses that an undergraduate can take. More than any other subject, it develops an analytical intuition and helps students think about how to look at a situation, assess the parameters and underlying assumptions, and come up with a solution to a complex problem. I have years of experience in solving complex physics problems both through rigorous coursework and practical research experience. As a result, I am extremely skilled at helping students develop a physical intuition for solving problems, equipping them with analytical skills that translate to a wide variety of fields.

Although trigonometry is often seen as a minor field of math, it is an absolutely foundational field that defines how we relate to our 3-dimensional world. I have a strong background in using trigonometry not only in advanced physics and chemistry homework, but also in a practical research setting. Because of this, I can help students understand that trigonometry is more than just a boring series of identities to memorize and instead show them how it is a fundamental part of how we interact with the world around us.
