I’m a recent college graduate with an English degree who’s passionate about teaching reading comprehension and writing skills. I haven’t done any official teaching before, which is part of why I’ve set my rate lower than average, instead my experience lies in more casually helping my peers. I have many friends who speak English as a second language, and I’m the person they come to when they have questions about anything related to it, like the different connotations between two words, how they should structure a sentence, or what verb tense to use.
My focus in tutoring students on Wyzant would be identifying the areas they’re struggling with and then teaching that area from the ground up. For example, if a student struggles with grammar and punctuation, I’d focus on teaching them the purpose of those rules first, then transition into what the rules are and how to use them. This is far more effective than just teaching grammar rules or any other system as individual things to memorize and helps give them a higher degree of mastery overall. This kind of teaching is difficult to do outside of a one-on-one or very small group setting, so it’s much harder to get in a traditional classroom setting.
