Hi! I’m Matthew, a 6-year member of the Taiwanese National Chess Team and a competitive player for over 10 years. Throughout my chess career, I’ve won 20+ national tournaments in Taiwan, represented Taiwan in 5 international competitions, and at my peak ranked 23rd in Taiwan across all age groups. I also qualified for the Singapore National Chess Team and currently hold a 2200+ rating on Chess.com.

While I’m proud of my competitive achievements, what matters most to me now is helping students grow through chess. Over the past two years, I’ve worked with students of all ages and levels, from complete beginners learning how the pieces move to advanced tournament players refining openings, calculation, and positional understanding.

My teaching philosophy is simple: strong fundamentals, structured improvement, and confidence-building. I design personalized lesson plans tailored to each student’s goals, whether that’s preparing for tournaments, increasing online rating, improving calculation speed, or simply developing strategic thinking skills. For beginners, I focus on building a clear foundation and making chess engaging and intuitive. For intermediate and advanced players, I emphasize deeper calculation, positional understanding, and competitive preparation. Lessons typically include:
- Structured tactical training
- Opening repertoire development
- Middlegame planning and pattern recognition
- Endgame fundamentals
- Game analysis with practical feedback
- Tournament mindset and time management strategies

I’ve taught both in-person and online, and I aim to make every lesson structured and motivating. Chess builds discipline and focus, so I strive to help each student develop not just as a player, but as a thinker.

If you’re looking for serious improvement with guidance from an experienced national-level competitor, I’d love to work together. Feel free to reach out with any questions or to schedule a lesson!

I have competed in over 50 tournaments in my chess career, most notably being part of the Taiwanese national chess team for over 6 years. I have taught in both in-person and online formats in my hometown, Taiwan, and here in Chicago for the past 2 years. I am now both a player and a coach, striving to help students improve their game. I can personalize lesson plans according to students' needs, and students of all levels are welcome.
