Hi! I'm Bry (pronounced bree). I've got a bachelor's of Engineering in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Chicago. I consider myself a lifelong student who looks at nearly everything as a learning opportunity. I specialize in computer science and programming.
I began tutoring computer science while I was a computer science major at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I worked individually with college students who came for homework help, but I would also combine for students working on the same assignment. I ran interactive sessions at local conferences for technical topics like basic Linux commands, in which I taught up to 15 students in a single 2 hour session. For two years, I ran a makerspace that allowed adults to collaboratively learn and create. I taught numerous classes regarding shop safety, 3d printers, circuitry and other topics on creation using the tools within the space.
As for my professional experience, I worked in industry as a software developer for 8 years. I have programmed professionally with C#, .NET, Javascript, JQuery, SSRS, and Tableau. I was also part of an indie team that published a game to Steam, using Unity and C#.
When I'm assisting with an assignment or helping debug code, I like to start with the student asking a question or showing me what they don't understand. We'll dissect the problem together, working through each part until the student can generate the answer themselves. If the student struggles to formulate what they're confused about, I teach techniques on breaking down the assignment into workable parts. My tutoring toolkit leans towards drawing diagrams, using metaphors and analogies, and finding patterns that can help a student apply knowledge of a related topic to the one at hand.
Please feel free to message me with any questions. If you would like to chat before we start, I offer a free 15 minute consultation. I look forward to working with you!
