About Meghan

Bio

I have my degree in English and have taught HS English for nearly 30 years—from right here in Chicago to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Monterrey, Mexico—including many years of working with Advanced Placement students as well as Diverse Learners. The study of English literature and writing inevitably requires inferential reading as well as a close study of language and usage—essential skills for SAT and ACT prep, composing College Essays, and HS selective enrollment testing.

I have taught both SAT and ACT prep in Reading and English to full classes, small groups, and individuals throughout my tenure. Teaching English is my joy, and I would love to help students who are interested in growing and developing their English skills.

Essay Writing

Essay Writing

Great essays require insight into the literature, so the first task is to discuss what the prompt requires and on what the student wishes to focus. Then we must determine if there is sufficient textual evidence to support their argument. I have my degree in English and have taught HS English for nearly 30 years. I work with students throughout the writing process: brainstorming, creating a thesis and preview of support (organizational plan included here), crafting, selecting and integrating evidence, and polishing through editing.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

I have my degree in English and have taught HS English for nearly 30 years. A proper thesis statement must include the WHAT and the WHY: what you will focus the essay on (the content being addressed) and why that is significant beyond the work itself (the broader message that the author shares). The preview statement, which follows the thesis, is the HOW you will prove your claim (main ideas, literary devices, etc). This sets up the organizational plan for the essay.
