I'm Kate, and I've been teaching & tutoring reading, writing, and literature at different grade levels for 20 years. I started my teaching career in Ilsan, South Korea, in 2004 as a pre-K and elementary ESL teacher. I'm Kate, and I've been teaching & tutoring reading, writing, and literature at different grade levels for 20 years. I started my teaching career in Ilsan, South Korea, in 2004 as a pre-K and elementary ESL teacher. I loved working with my classes there and took on private tutoring opportunities as well, helping middle-school students with vocabulary and writing exercises. After a year, I returned to the US to earn my MA & PhD in English Lit and my TESOL certificate, working with a mix of international students learning ESL and native English speakers learning to write college-level essays. I continued private tutoring during this time as well, working online with elementary and middle-school students back in South Korea on their English language skills.

Since then, I've taught both writing and literature classes at the undergrad level which has given me a lot of experience in both the classroom and mentoring individual students in reading comprehension, literary analysis, and essay structure. I thrive in these one-on-one settings because I believe people thrive the most in education when they are seen and treated as a full human. I love talking to my students, hearing their thoughts, questions, and hopes for the future, and connecting them with the big ideas and nitty-gritty skills that help them live their fullest potential.

I have been publishing fiction, non-fiction, and poetry for 10 years. I am part of an ongoing feedback driven writer's group that meets twice a month and am a member of SFWA, a professional writing organization. Outside of my graduate work, I've taken 3 professional writing workshops using the Iowa workshopping method. As an editor, I have 10+ years experience coaching private clients through developing fiction, memoir, and academic prose projects in an instructive, supportive manner and worked polishing texts for publication at Nautilus Publishing Company with developmental, line, and copyediting. In the past, I've volunteered as a first reader for Liminal Stories and a guest editor for Remixt Magazine.

I have 15+ years of experience offering charismatic, effective teaching to diverse audiences including undergraduate and graduate students, nontraditional university students, adult students, and high-school & middle-school audiences. I've created over a dozen writing-focused courses for several levels of learners, in-person and online and designed and facilitated classroom materials & lessons to communicate complex concepts. I always start by identifying learning goals, then building my lessons to target those goals, adjusting as needed along the way. My favorite way to assess student writing performance is through the portfolio method, and I provide comprehensive feedback that helps writers grow from the place they're currently at.
