My tutoring sessions are a constant discussion starting with me asking "What are your goals for today". By asking probing questions I determine the student’s comprehension of the subject matter, then I can help them build on that knowledge. Through asking leading questions I guide a student to the answers to problems. Obtaining the correct answer to a question is very important, but just as important is ensuring a student can apply the same concepts, and the same subject matter to other examples/questions. Doing this aids the students greatly in their performance on exams. I will also discuss the best test-taking strategies, such as time management, with students when necessary.
When tutoring I make sure I have some fun with my students. I pay close attention to each student's learning style and limitations to adjust my tutoring session accordingly. When I see a student needs a break, I will use humor at times. I utilize visual, auditory, teaching techniques, which can be fun for the student. Building a rapport with the student enables me to determine how to better serve their specific learning style and it can help me break down any mental blocks they may have with a subject matter.
I taught mathematics, physics and electronics full time for 12 years at the collegiate level. I was a personal tutor cumulatively for 5 years with Millikin University, Heartland Community College, and Illinois Institute of Technology. At different community colleges and ITT Technical Institute I instructed and tutored students from the ages of 18 too 55.
