Hi! I'm Dr. Kelsey R., and I'm a writing coach, tutor, and award-winning researcher with a PhD from the University of Chicago and a BA from Brown. For 12+ years, I have taught hundreds of high school, college, and graduate students how to think critically and write effectively. If you want help reaching your goals—whether by maximizing your test scores or crafting an exceptional personal statement—please contact me to schedule a free consultation.

As your writing coach, I will help you use the written parts of the application—the personal statement and supplements—to tell a coherent and compelling story about you.

Struggling to start? No problem—I will guide you through brainstorming and ensure that you get your thoughts on paper, develop your ideas, and start drafting. Through an iterative writing process, I will help you improve the narrative structure, communicate a central idea, and catch any errors. The result: a polished, persuasive essay that stands out to admissions officers.

I offer comprehensive support to help students excel on the digital SAT Verbal and the ACT English and Reading. With an 800 in SAT Verbal, I know what it takes to master these exams—and I stay up to date with the latest versions to ensure I offer the best strategies for success. Whether you're aiming for a top score or looking to make significant improvements, I provide expert guidance tailored to your needs.

I strongly believe that increasing familiarity with a test’s core concepts, question types, and common “traps” can help anyone improve their scores. After an initial assessment, we’ll develop a structured plan, and I’ll provide the strategies and targeted practice you need for success.

For 5 years, I served as an instructor and advisor in UChicago’s Division of Social Sciences. Students report that I am warm, patient, and extremely supportive. I love helping students identify their goals, strengthen their skills, and gain the confidence they need to succeed.

Kelsey is simply the best!

Kelsey has been an incredible help to my daughter in preparing for her SAT verbal over the past month. She quickly identified the areas that needed focus and provided countless tips and strategies that are spot-on. She also makes each lesson engaging and fun, which is super helpful for a rising senior. She is supportive, knowledgeable, and professional. In a short month, my daughter’s practice test scores have improved by more than 130 points, just in time for her official test this week. We are so grateful - this progress would not have been possible without Kelsey!

Exceptional writing coach for vet school personal statement & essays

Kelsey served as a writing coach for my daughter during her veterinary school application process, guiding her from initial brainstorming through theme development and final editing. She played an essential role in helping Shannon discover and convey her authentic voice, resulting in a personal statement that truly stood out. After reviewing the final draft, my daughter’s supervisor—a practicing DVM—remarked that it was among the strongest personal statements she had ever read. Given the incredible competitiveness of veterinary school admissions today, we felt fortunate to have Kelsey’s expertise and support throughout this stressful process. While we don’t yet know the final outcome of this application cycle, my daughter has already been invited to several interviews, which speaks volumes about the strength of her materials. We are deeply grateful to Kelsey for her partnership and guidance during such an important journey.

Responsive and great to work with.

Recently Mrs Robbins helped me with my college application essay. She was able to work around my schedule to ensure that we got finished the essay on time and she offered great insight on how to keep the personality in my writing while also making it more professional. Her time as a college admissions officer guided my writing to make it fit what the colleges are working for. Overall she was very helpful.

Excellent SAT and college essay tutor!

We started working with Kelsey after my daughter scored lower than expected on the verbal section of her SAT. She was feeling discouraged and unsure of how to move forward. Kelsey immediately put her at ease. She has a warm, supportive presence and a real ability to explain complex grammar concepts in a way that finally made sense. In just two months, my daughter’s verbal score went from a 600 to a 760. We’ve continued working with Kelsey on college essays, and that’s been just as valuable. My daughter says she feels like Kelsey really understands her voice and has helped her see parts of her story she hadn’t recognized before. It’s been a genuinely empowering experience. We feel lucky to have found her.

Exceptional tutoring, invested and caring guidance

I honestly can't say enough about how amazing my experience with my tutor was. When I first started working on my fellowship application, I was totally overwhelmed and didn't even know where to begin. Kelsey took the time to actually get to know ME - not just my academics, but my whole story and journey. What made her different was her ability to see potential in me that I couldn't even see in myself. She asked questions that made me dig deeper and helped me connect dots between my experiences that I never would have made on my own. By understanding who I was as a person, she helped me shape my application in a way that was 100% authentic and truly showcased why I was perfect for this fellowship. Kelsey's feedback was always constructive but never harsh. She wasn't afraid to tell me when something wasn't working, but she always had suggestions for how to make it better. She pushed me to revise and refine in ways that dramatically improved my application. The skills I learned about presenting myself and my experiences are things that I will take forward. If you're looking for someone who will genuinely invest in your success and help you create something that represents the best version of yourself, I couldn't recommend Kelsey more highly.
