About Kate

Bio

I am a classical new music pianist and alt chamber pop songwriter splitting my time between the music scenes of LA, Chicago, and Ukraine. I have a BA in Music from Pomona College and an MFA from California Institute of the Arts, where I studied piano, harp, music production, and music technology with Grammy-awarded artists such as Vicki Ray (piano), John Baffa (recording arts, advanced mixing techniques), and Alison Bjorkedal (harp). I am a classical new music pianist and alt chamber pop songwriter splitting my time between the music scenes of LA, Chicago, and Ukraine. I have a BA in Music from Pomona College and an MFA from California Institute of the Arts, where I studied piano, harp, music production, and music technology with Grammy-awarded artists such as Vicki Ray (piano), John Baffa (recording arts, advanced mixing techniques), and Alison Bjorkedal (harp). Outside of my personal pop and piano performance project, I am an in-demand session pianist, having held positions such as opera rehearsal pianist, musical theater accompanist, orchestral pianist, studio session pianist, vocal and choral accompanist, as well as solo and chamber new music pianist. I have premiered countless new music works by my colleagues and have experience in the latest cutting-edge experimental piano playing techniques.

My teaching is deeply student-centered. I bring all knowledge, methods, and skills I have to what you have in mind and to what goals you are after--whether beginner or advanced. I have experience teaching standard piano repertoire, piano composition, music production, including mixing and mastering, as well as applied piano for songwriting, including making scores for songs using Sibelius. I have taught preschool through undergrad and enjoy teaching all ages equally.

I am proficient in Sibelius, Logic Pro, ProTools, Ableton, drum controllers, orchestration and arrangement techniques and will help you find ease and methods for your unique visions and goals. I will support you in expanding your musical horizons via exposure to new music and assist in translating this gathered exposure into actionable inspiration fuel.

I have passed SAT French, and DALF C1 (advanced) French exams and was accepted to French universities. I have taken advanced collegiate coursework in francophone topics and attended youth politics conferences in France. I read, sing, and rap in French and have won school awards and competitions in French and done much creative writing and editing with enthusiasm. I would love to help you set up a plan for success in making French a part of your daily routine: easy and pleasant.

I have studied harp from scratch in college and graduate school and performed in an orchestra and solo. I have experience writing session harp music for pop songs.

I can help at elementary, undergraduate, and even graduate levels, as well as for exploratory and exposure purposes in enriching one’s practice. I am also well versed in alternate music theories and methods explaining and facilitating understanding of how music works.

MFA performer-composer from the California Institute of the Arts where I studied with Vicki Ray of the LA Chamber Orchestra and the LA Phil New Music Group. Played classical pieces such as the Gershwin piano concerto in F, experimental new music pieces such as the music of George Crumb, and new music premieres by contemporary living composers. Served as opera repetiteur in opera productions, as worship pianist at churches, as vocal accompanist, in chamber groups, in orchestras, and on pop songs. Skilled at teaching piano for pop songwriters and making scores.

I have presented a graduate recital made up of innovative alternative pop songs and have taken graduate coursework in advanced songwriting and production techniques. I am an award-winning published poet.

I have over 15 years of experience in admissions coaching and writing with cases of admissions to top schools such as Pomona College, Wesleyan University, boarding schools like Andover Phillips Academy and the Hotchkiss School, as well as international schools and art programs.
