Hey there, I'm Kendal! I graduated with honors in Theatre Performance and while I love performing, I discovered my love of teaching while I studied for my degree. I stumbled into ESL tutoring online and spent six years in a one-on-one setting guiding Chinese students ages 3-16 as they worked on reading, writing, and speaking English. The classes were full immersion, and I crafted lesson plans so even a student who didn't know one word could within a few months begin to have small conversations. My theatre background helped with improvising if a student needed extra assistance or if a particular approach wasn't resonating with them. Sessions included a variety of topics such as math, science, history, social sciences, and language arts. Through the use of age-appropriate games, we'd explore English further without it feeling like "boring homework". Assignments would be individualized and often discovered through our specific tutoring session so that way it was tailored to each student's individual needs.
Through this experience, I became TOEFL-certified along with an ACT/SAT tutoring certification. I was one of the head teachers and tutored full-time. This certification allows me to not only assist students for whom English is a second language, but also students who need assistance with reading, writing, grammar, and test-taking skills.
Teaching is magic. You think you're passing along educational information to provide your students with the tools needed to navigate society but the more years I teach, the more I realize how so much of it isn't about grammar or testing skills. I watch students learn to trust themselves and their ability to do hard things and I find that when I thread in my theatre background of understanding how humans work, my students grow in both the academic and personal sense which is humbling to watch.
I'm easy to reach and have a flexible schedule so we can schedule at your convenience. Feel free to reach out with any questions, requests, or comments; I love open communication!
