Hello, my name is Nikebia. I'm a Michigan State University graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work. I also minored in Women and Gender Studies, Human Behavior and Social Services, and received my certificate in Non-profit Leadership. Most of my assignments required discussion or writing, which of course was based on plenty of reading. Though I've always enjoyed reading, I had to adapt to the multiple, often dense, nonfiction texts required for various classes. I had to find a system that worked for me. As an English tutor and paraprofessional, I've had to help students find the system that works for them, as well as how to understand and analyze texts, and take the information they've learned and turn it into well-developed writing.
I have over 5 years of experience working with youth across various settings, including tutoring, mentoring, nutritional lessons, and community gardening. Post-graduation, I worked with City Year as a high school English tutor and social-emotional mentor. Afterwards, I gained two years of experience providing support to across various subjects - including algebra, ceramics, and social sciences - to students from 9th-12th grade with special education needs. My tutoring models ranged from groups of ten down to one-on-one interventions, in classrooms, pull-outs, and after school program settings. My specialization is in English and Writing but I also have strong experience in algebra, geometry, and civics. In my years as a high school tutor and paraprofessional, and elementary - middle camp counselor, I have worked with children with a range of learning challenges, including ADHD, ASD, and intellectual disabilities.
As a tutor, my purpose is to help you find confidence and relieve stress in areas of struggle, and to encourage you to take ownership and pride in your work. Please feel free to reach out with any questions!
