Hi, I'm Yaneza! I am a former middle school teacher specializing in English Language Arts and History/Social Studies. I hold ESL and Bilingual endorsements and have taught in Chicago Public Schools for 6 years, covering 5th, 6th, and 8th grades. Outside the classroom, I have coached high school dance and boxing through the FightHER Project. Teaching and learning have been passions of mine since a young age, starting with internships as a classroom assistant, becoming a Golden Apple Scholar, and eventually serving as a public school teacher. I believe the best learning occurs when we are empowered and engaged—beliefs that I have actively applied throughout my teaching career.
In my teaching practice, I frequently used small pull-out groups and one-on-one sessions to address individual student needs. During these sessions, we would start with a mini-lesson before practicing the relevant skill. This approach combined digital and physical resources, depending on the skill. When working one-on-one with students, I emphasize setting SMART goals to guide our time together. I have observed that students achieve the most growth when they feel empowered and involved in the learning process. This collaborative approach extends to working with parents as well; I welcome any resources or tools they might have to support their child’s learning. Ultimately, my goal is to help students feel empowered and enthusiastic about their academic success.
