Hello! My name is Matt, and I am a high school English teacher and tutor with over 15 years of experience working with teenagers and their families. Learning to write a clear essay or preparing for exams like the SAT, ACT, or IB exams can cause a lot of frustration at home. My role as a tutor is to help your child feel capable, organized, and confident about their work. As a classroom teacher in Chicago Public Schools holding National Board Certification and an Illinois Master Teacher designation, I work with high schoolers every day. I understand where students typically get stuck, how assignments are evaluated, and how to break complex tasks down into clear steps.
Over the past fifteen years, I have taught students ages 12 through 18 across several environments, including public high school classrooms, Phillips Exeter Academy Summer School, and college-access programs like Upward Bound. I earned my B.A. in English from the University of Chicago and my M.A. from the University of Michigan. When I work with a student one-on-one, I avoid simply correcting their errors or rewriting sentences for them. Instead, we focus on the underlying skills: how to structure an argument, how to read a dense text carefully, and how to write a college application essay that accurately reflects who they are.
I offer online tutoring with flexible evening and weekend hours, along with essay review between sessions when deadlines are approaching. If you would like to discuss working together, please send me a message with your student's grade level and what they are currently focusing on—such as preparing for an upcoming test, writing an IB essay, or drafting the Common App main statement. From there, we can set up a brief conversation to talk through their goals and see if there is a good fit.
