Bio

Salve, χαῖρε, and hello! My name is Lilia and I am a PhD student at the University of Chicago, where I study medieval Latin authors (currently Hildegard of Bingen). I have over a decade of experience working with ancient languages, and I'm also a former ESL teacher; I bring the two together to make Latin and Greek approachable (and even fun!) for everyone.

I have over a decade of experience working with ancient languages, and I'm also a former ESL teacher; I bring the two together to make Latin and Greek approachable (and even fun!) for everyone.

I've seen firsthand how students get left behind in Latin classes. It can be overwhelming to memorize endings and learn confusing grammar. My approach focuses on comprehension, so students can actually understand what they're reading on the page. For students who need more grammar support, we can slow down and break down concepts with plenty of examples. For students who want to try something different, I draw from the science of language learning to teach an approach called Comprehensible Input (CI). Above all, I try to teach Latin and Greek for human beings—not memorization robots!

I've worked with high school, college students, and passionate hobbyists. I've helped students just starting out, and those puzzling through authors like Pliny and Lucretius. I'm happy to tailor lessons to meet your needs, so you can achieve your language learning goals. If you're struggling through Latin or Greek, a new approach could be the key to success!

Approved Subjects

Classics

Classics

I received my MA in Classics from the University of Maryland and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. While there, I pursued coursework in Greek and Latin literature, and taught classes in mythology and history. As a tutor, I am passionate about bringing the past alive for students. Classics can be overcomplicated in the classroom; but the books of the past can be exciting if we let them speak to us now!
Greek

Greek

I'm a PhD student at the University of Chicago with over a decade of experience. Many Greek students feel overwhelmed with grammar and memorization. As a former ESL teacher, I draw on the science of language learning to offer Greek for human beings—not grammar memorizing robots. I offer clear grammar explanation with plenty of examples, and a focus on reading comprehension, so that whatever your goals are, you can gain confidence with your Greek.
Latin

Latin

Literature

Literature

I'm a PhD student at the University of Chicago, where I work with medieval books. Whether it's a three thousand year old poem or a story written yesterday, literature is for everyone. I'm passionate about making texts come alive for students, so that you can wrestle with literature just as people have for generations.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

I am a PhD student at the University of Chicago with extensive experience writing and editing in the humanities. I've written for both academic journals, and magazines. I'm passionate about helping students make their arguments with clarity, so their ideas can shine through for readers to appreciate!

Extremely intelligent yet has outstanding humility!

Lilia is very kind and patient. She is also knowledgeable, knows her subject extremely well, yet humble enough to teach it in a slow and gentle manner. As an older student, I really appreciate her teaching methods and would recommend her to everyone!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor with a passion for Greek!

I've taken quite a few lessons with Lilia. We have been working through the Hansen and Quinn intensive Greek course, and have worked through around 5 units. I couldn't put a price on her help especially with how few good resources there are for ancient Greek, there's no substitute for a good teacher!
