I help Latin and Ancient Greek students move beyond word-by-word translation so they can read the language with confidence. Many students come to me overwhelmed by confusing grammar explanations, or stuck puzzling through sentences. My goal is to make the language feel coherent, meaningful, and manageable, to take away the stress.

I’m a graduate student at the University of Chicago with an MA in Classics from the University of Maryland, and I have over a decade of experience studying and teaching ancient languages. I’ve worked with texts ranging from Homer and Plato to Cicero and Aquinas, and I have hundreds of hours of experience tutoring high school, college, and adult learners alike.

As a former ESL teacher, I know firsthand how people learn languages. Latin and Greek students today are left behind in the classroom because the old-school teaching methods treat us like memorization robots, not like people. My teaching combines clear, concrete grammar explanation with research-backed comprehension strategies that help students learn languages like English and Spanish. I can even offer spoken Latin and Latin composition classes for interested students.

Whether you’re just starting out, trying to keep up with a demanding class, preparing for an exam, or returning to Greek or Latin on your own, I’m happy to help. I aim to create a supportive, patient learning environment where students can build confidence and make real progress. I always tailor my lessons to your needs, and can help you create a study plan to get to reading fluency fast.

If you’re feeling discouraged, you’re not alone — and you don’t need to be a “language person” to succeed. Latin or Greek can feel approachable, meaningful, and even fun. Feel free to reach out with what you’re working on or any questions you have!

Classics

Classics

I received my MA in Classics from the University of Maryland and graduated with a 4.0 GPA. While there, I pursued coursework in Greek and Latin literature, and taught classes in mythology and history. As a tutor, I am passionate about bringing the past alive for students. Classics can be overcomplicated in the classroom; but the books of the past can be exciting if we let them speak to us now!
Greek

Greek

I received an MA in Classics from the University of Maryland with a 4.0 GPA; I have studied a wide range of Classical Greek texts, from Homer to the New Testament.
Latin

Latin

I help students learn Latin in a way that supports real reading and comprehension, not just word-by-word translation. My approach combines clear grammar explanation with reading strategies that help sentences make sense as a whole; I also have expertise in spoken and written Latin, for students who would like to practice those. I work with beginners through advanced students on grammar, translation, and exam preparation, always tailoring sessions to course expectations. The goal is confidence, fluency, and meaningful engagement with Latin texts.
Thesis Writing

Thesis Writing

I wrote a thesis for my Classics MA that earned me a fellowship and helped me get into a Religious Studies graduate program at U Chicago. I've also had non-fiction writing appear in magazines, and have forthcoming academic publications. I'm passionate about helping students write with clarity, so their ideas can shine through for readers!

Extremely intelligent yet has outstanding humility!

Lilia is very kind and patient. She is also knowledgeable, knows her subject extremely well, yet humble enough to teach it in a slow and gentle manner. As an older student, I really appreciate her teaching methods and would recommend her to everyone!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor with a passion for Greek!

I've taken quite a few lessons with Lilia. We have been working through the Hansen and Quinn intensive Greek course, and have worked through around 5 units. I couldn't put a price on her help especially with how few good resources there are for ancient Greek, there's no substitute for a good teacher!
