I am a professional composer, cellist, and recording artist. I received a PhD in Music Composition at Northwestern University, where I have taught a number of music classes, including aural skills, music theory, music composition, and Music and the Visual Arts. I've written music in lots of different contexts, for solo instruments, chamber groups, large ensembles and orchestra, pure percussion, pure electronic, for dance, and for theater.

I also teach cello or Spanish lessons to beginner and intermediate students learning for the first time.

In my weekly lessons, you'll get the same quality of learning that a university student would receive, and I will equip you with all the tools you need to improve your musical skills. Every person has a unique creative voice, and through my lessons, you'll learn to sculpt and craft your individuality to make your music shine.

I teach lessons to elementary school students and older. Whether you're just starting or you've been composing for a while and feel stuck, I can help you on your journey. My primary specialty is contemporary concert music, but I can teach students writing music in any genre or style. I teach exclusively online, and I can give lessons on cello, electric guitar, electric bass, music theory, ear-training, and music composition in any style or genre, or Spanish. I look forward to working with you!

Cello

Cello

I have been playing the cello for 20 years. I received my degree in cello performance from the University of New Mexico in 2016, and since then, I have written several works for cello solo that explore the deeper acoustic behaviors of the instrument. I can teach basic skills like scales, etudes, solo music, chamber music, and orchestral parts.
Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

I received my PhD in music composition from Northwestern University. I have received honors and recognitions for my work and I can teach composition in any style or genre. I can give support in areas such as music theory, notation, improvisation, recording, using DAWs to realize ideas, collaboration, and much more.
Ear Training

Ear Training

I have taught aural skills (ear training) at Northwestern University for music majors. In the class, we learn to effectively sight-sing and dictate melodies and 4-part harmonies using tracking techniques, learning solfege in major and minor keys, as well as how to categorize and hear chromatic harmonies. Students become confident in their abilities to hear chord progressions and accurately dictate them using 5-line staff notation.
General Music

General Music

I've taught music theory, aural skills, music composition, and special topics courses like music and the visual arts at Northwestern University. I can give insights into the history of Western classical music, music fundamentals such as harmony and theory, and music composition. Students will receive the same care and attention that university-level undergraduates receive when pursuing a music degree.
Guitar

Guitar

I have played the electric guitar since I was 11 years old. It was one of the very first instruments I learned to play and opened up my passion for music. I can teach beginners basic fundamentals like posture, hand positions, chords, scales, playing with a pick, and hybrid picking. I can teach how to read music or tabs, depending on the specific needs of the student.
Music History

Music History

I received my bachelor's degree in Music Theory & Composition and Cello Performance from the University of New Mexico, where I studied medieval music history to the present, 20th and 21st century musics, music from Mexico, and music from the Americas. I received my PhD in music composition from Northwestern University, where I also took graduate level courses in music history and musicology. I have been teaching music majors for 5+ years.
Music Theory

Music Theory

I received my Bachelor's degree in Music Theory and Composition from the University of New Mexico in 2016 and my PhD in Music Composition from Northwestern University in 2022, where I studied a number of theory courses, from the standard theory sequence to advanced post-tonal theory and post-1945 music theory. I teach music theory to music majors at Northwestern University, where we study the fundamentals of Western classical music as well as common chord progressions found in both classical and popular genres.
Sight Singing

Sight Singing

I have taught sight-singing at Northwestern University for music majors. In the class, we learn to effectively sight-sing melodies using tried and true strategies and strengthening the internal ear, and learning solfege in major and minor keys. In lessons with my, I'll teach you the best ways to approach singing a melody you see for the first time by paying close attention to meter, mode, and any categorize chromatic alterations that may appear.
Spanish

Spanish

I come from a Mexican American background and speak Spanish fluently as a second language. I speak it daily with family members and colleagues, and can help you learn the nuances of the language via reading, writing, listening, verbal exercises, understanding the vocal production of Spanish-specific phonemes, and more.

Professional with great patience

Mathew was very knowledgeable and was patient enough to successfully teach my autistic son. My son was excited after the lesson and kept talking about how Mathew taught him to improve the bowing skill. I am happy for my son to finally find the great cello teacher!
