I lost my enthusiasm for becoming a university faculty member; what I enjoyed was teaching. I completed an online MEd and became certified as a Spanish teacher (8-12). I have certifications for both Spanish AP exams (Language and Culture; and Literature), and for Heritage Spanish learners.
I have taught high school, community college and undergraduate courses at the university level in Spanish language and culture. My evaluations have been consistently excellent.
The US standards for Foreign Language teachers are the "5 Cs": Communication, Culture, Comparisons, Connections and Community. In more than 30 years of teaching I have not relied on textbooks, but on materials collected over the years in order to incorporate all of the 5Cs.
Whether tutoring or teaching an entire class I focus on those standards: communicating and connecting with students and sharing the diverse cultures of the 21 countries of the Spanish speaking world. With that breadth of content, there will always be something that interests every student.
During the pandemic teaching a foreign language online was exceptionally challenging. I developed a system for meeting with any student needing individual help. In some instances parents asked to be part of the meeting; I encourage that!
Tutoring is another opportunity to build a community---by communicating, connecting, sharing and comparing cultures. I look forward to the opportunity to meet with you!
