About Sean

Bio

I love to help people unlock their potential.
Over the years, I've tutored many students and many subjects, from high school math and geometry to college writing and literature. My experience is broad, and while my personal strength lies in the writing and reading borne out of an undergraduate double major in English and Philosophy, I have proficiencies in mathematics, languages, computer science, and more. I am proud to have helped many students and peers reach a higher level of success...

I am proud to have helped many students and peers reach a higher level of success through cooperative understanding.

My passion for tutoring comes from the knowledge that many teens and adults have great cognitive capacity and that too often the greatest barrier in personal education is a lack of appropriate communication. Meeting a student individually and learning how best to communicate to them in order to help them learn can be a richly rewarding experience, and sharing knowledge of the things I enjoy is icing on the cake.

I have also had success with standardized tests, scoring a 33 on the ACT and a 1490 on the SAT. While the primary factor in test success is an understanding of the concepts and areas being tested, there are a few things a student can practice and understand about taking the test itself that will ensure they are in top form during the testing period.

I appreciate the opportunity to meet new students and gauge whether I am the best tutor for the situation.

Chess

I have played chess for several years, both over-the-board and correspondence. Though not officially ranked with any national OTB affiliation such as the United States Chess Federation (USCF), I am officially rated 2187 (as of March 2011) with the International Correspondence Chess Federation (ICCF). I have played in several friendly tournaments through ICCF with national teams such as Germany, England, Scotland, Denmark, Sweden, Canada, Ecuador, and Romania, on behalf of my club team. I have also played in the competitive ICCF Champions' League tournament, where the best correspondence players in the world meet on multiple boards and divisions to compete for the team championship. I have a deep understanding of the game and its concepts, tactics, and strategies, and a working understanding of how to relate these principles to someone learning the game at any level.
